Eight years ago today the @nytmag published my cover story on school segregation in the great “melting pot” of NYC and the way elite parents and politicians conspire with structural inequality to keep our schools separate and unequal. Eight years later, this sweet baby girl on the cover is getting ready to graduate 8th grade as a bright, empathetic, funny, honor roll student from @uaunison, a non-screened, neighborhood middle school. By test-score metrics many would label this school a failing school, but just as I write in the piece, we judge these schools AND their students without ever stepping foot inside. @herandrews She was making her child live her principles, and now her child will suffer the consequences of that political choice.

It's one thing to choose a political ideology yourself, it's another to force the kid to a lifetime of negative repercussions because of a squandered education

I just finished reading the whole thing and this kid has genuinely suffered child abuse. She pleaded for years for a better education, a less chaotic environment, and her DEI obsessed Mom wouldn't give it to her. Her formative years were squandered in pursuit of a feckless political ideology.

Najya grew agitated. “You know what I am talking about. We looked up our school! We saw the test scores. We saw the ratings.” She ticked off the school’s below-state average reading and math scores, and that it ranked poorly on a popular school-rating website. I said I was aware of her school’s academic rankings, but that test scores alone do not define a school.
