#JETS-#SEAHAWKS BLOWN CALL:
The Impetus for the Return of Officials' Use of Instant Replay

From 1986 through 1991, the #NFL had utilized officials' instant replay in regular season games. However, prior to the 1992 season, it was eliminated.

With :25 remaining in this 1998 contest and Seattle leading New York by five, Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde runs a QB draw on 4th-&-Goal, but is stopped clearly short of the goal line.

However, the officiating crew led by Phil Luckett — with no use of instant replay available for officials at the time — erroneously rule it a touchdown, resulting in a Jets victory, 32-31.

Just ten days earlier, Luckett had been center stage in the Steelers-Lions "Thanksgiving Overtime Coin Toss Fiasco".

This missed call led directly to the NFL's reinstatement of officials' instant replay the following season.
