@rachelwalexande The DDA who makes these decisions (Amy Queen) is also running to be a judge against the only former civil rights lawyer on the Marion County bench, who also happens to be the only African American judge on the bench here as well. Vote for Erious Johnson!
@BiancaTylek The funny thing about that is, as a criminal defense attorney, I’d imagine DAs nationwide would be in favor of free jail calls too, because it gives them the potential to collect more evidence against people. Free calls = more recorded calls to listen to and use as evidence.
@ZachsORoutdoors I hate to be the bearer of bad news Zach, but until you pave your driveway yourself, you are the reason why housing prices are so expensive.
So, because I'm thinking about it tonight, I wanted to explain what I mean when I say "if you let police break everything, you need public defenders to fix everything." I wanted to give y'all some shocking facts (with receipts) so we can get fired up together.
THREAD: A story on how the KKK passed a law in Oregon 80+ yrs ago that still keeps disproportionately Black people locked up. How a jailhouse lawyer got the case to Supreme Court. And how in *next few days* lawmakers could finally topple a racist monument. Allow for a fair trial:
@scattermoon It’s meant to be public art, not a bench that an artist “ruined”. I think it’s demonstrative of why we need full benches and not the cut up, bars sectioning off benches that cities make today to prevent people from laying down.
@melani_fuller@NataliePateGwin “It's "unfortunate" the school board has become political” -Linda Farrington while simultaneously hosting a conservative political rally about Salem-Keizer Public Schools. 🤔
