Should Australia ban ransomware payments? And should the government be able to commandeer companies’ IT systems?
Cyber Security Studies expert @jeffreylfoster (@Macquarie_Uni) explains the government’s new cybersecurity agenda

Just published a new piece at the conversation on the new #cyber strategy paper:
Australia has a new cybersecurity agenda. Two key questions lie at its heart https://t.co/WKGS9EnwMZ via @ConversationEDU#auspol
@tobycmurray@RadioNational@andy_park Hi @tobycmurray, that might be a great idea. We're discussing a response from our team here at MQ, but I suspect it would be a lot stronger from a band of Universities. Assuming we can all agree ;) I'll drop you an email and see if we find a time to zoom for some initial ideas!
Yesterday, the Cyber Security Strategy paper was released. It was a great chance to chat with @RadioNational and @andy_park about the paper, and what it means . Have a listen here #auspol#cyber

Great to be on with Katherine from @radionz this morning talking about the threats of ransomware and the pros and cons of banning payments:
As ransomware attacks increase: should paying up be banned? https://t.co/TxrPJAhjt8
Glad to have had an opportunity to help contribute to this great podcast on the growing threat of #Ransomware, #cybercrime and how to stay safe with @RadioNational.

Great chat this morning with Cameron at @2ser radio about #auscyber and the recent data #breaches, on #twitter#optus#medibank, what can be done and how to protect yourself against current and future data breaches. You can have a listen here: https://t.co/jE8Ksmcfif
Great chatting with Miko at @redwiresdotau last week about the #medibank#databreach. Hope we see more changes from #auspol in the near future to help reduce the impact of the breaches by supporting better #cybersecurity practices in industry.
@D_Kutchel @jjwilliamscyber But these are specifically account pins - they stop someone from impersonating you within your current carrier. The usual "transferring to another carrier" hack wouldn't be stopped - but that's covered through a text the new carrier has to send to confirm.
@D_Kutchel @jjwilliamscyber Vodafone (https://t.co/184TyVizvY) and Telstra (https://t.co/Jzi7ZCHcZ9) are pretty straightforward to find info on. Optus info was always lacking, but they had a PDF that at least mentioned it, but that's now returning a 503 error (https://t.co/JcxerhzGSx).
Banning cyber ransom payments might help ward off attacks, but there are some cases where orgs feel intense pressure to pay up.
@JeffreyLFoster + @jjwilliamscyber weigh up pros + cons, and suggest an alternative to banning ransom payments.

Bans on cyber ransom payments being considered by #auspol government after #medibank and #optus#breach. But is the cure worse than the disease? @jjwilliamscyber and I discuss in this new article: https://t.co/5NLvtF97mt
Great summary of the #Medibank#Breach to date and links to Russian ransomware gangs by @hilary_whiteman - glad to have helped contribute a few quotes for it: https://t.co/F1QDrzcc9c
If you’re a #Medibankhack customer, you might be thinking of switching health insurer. Or maybe you’re with another company and want a better deal. Here’s how to switch, according to Henry Cutler and @AnamBilgrami @Macquarie_Uni

It’s reported the stolen data of more than one million Australians have already been leaked – and more is expected.
@JeffreyLFoster + @jjwilliamscyber from @Macquarie_Uni write on what has been leaked by #Medibank hackers and how it might be used:

Great working with you again on such a great article and timely topic @jjwilliamscyber. Going to be a rough next few days if more data keep leaking from the #medibank#breach!
Great conversation this morning with @abcnews about the dark web. Thanks to Rod Quinn for having me on the show!

Great chatting with BBC news yesterday about Australia's recent breaches - notably the #optusbreach - and the need for better data regulation in AU. I'm hopeful that recent media attention to the volume of breaches that occur regularly will see action in Canberra
