Everyone said AI would eat biology.
A decade later, AI is the one getting indigestion.
Here’s what actually happened - and what the new wave of GenAI biotechs need to learn:

I asked a simple question. Why AUM instead of hourly, like every other professional. I pay handsomely for legal and tax advice.
It’s fair. There may be a good answer and I’d genuinely hear it.
Your response? “Aren’t you in VC.”
Maybe you’re right. No one would pay my fees for your kind of work.
@markcecchini Every other professional that does those things or similar - doctors, lawyers, CPAs, therapists - charges hourly or on a per project basis.
Why do financial planners charge AUM?
Grew up a few blocks from this house. My block was mid-level hospital admins, community college profs, small-business owners, and a lot of widowed old ladies. My grade school was cops, firefighters, contractors. Nobody had a high-powered job, and they all owned homes here.
Almost all the kids I grew up with who did better than their parents moved away. The ones who did worse are living at home. Almost none of them could even think about affording their childhood home today.
@cremieuxrecueil As I medical student, I found one of the highest value things I could do for patients was reviewing long med lists. It was rare to find no drugs worth stopping, and I cut the med list in half a few times.
It took time to do and with no reimbursement, it didn’t get done.
This year I’ve gotten half a dozen different cold company pitches ending with “Is this something you’re not interested in? Just say so and I’ll take my hive elsewhere
What service is this?
@iPaulLee For emerging managers in vintages too early for significant DPI, what’s worth highlighting?
What’s the significance of early DPI and being top quartile for DPI in recent vintages even if that benchmark is a small number?
I logged 68,660 foods over 15 years.
The months I lost fat were not the months I ate the least. They were the months I cut moderately and stayed active.
When I cut harder, it backfired. Aggressive deficits raised my resting heart rate on a 4-6 week delay. And when RHR was elevated, the same deficit did nothing (r = 0.54 vs 0.07).
Hard dieting triggers the stress response that prevents hard dieting from working.
The harder I cut, the less weight I lost.
@RS_Flinn That’s why I pared down metrics to a handful of important ones. Also I worked on the print button layout.
Worked well in 1 appointment so far
Built a health dashboard at 3am during paternity leave with Claude Code. No engineering background.
Pulls my labs, trends everything, generates a printout I hand my doctor.
Every health app gives you 50+ metrics and no context. The value isn’t the dashboard. It’s knowing what belongs on it.
What would you put on yours?
