Many people ask me how to work with schools to implement #CorsiRosenthalBox es. I want to share a story about one small school in a rural community in Arizona that is doing it right. 1/
As a longtime humanitarian who has battled famines and hunger crises, I fear that starvation in Gaza has now passed the tipping point and we are going to see mass-scale starvation mortality.
A thread on famine momentum, famine response, and what it means for Gaza today.
Oof not great #H5N1 news
What we know:
-Person tests + with no (known) connection to animals
-Has pre-existing conditions (making it more likely to get sick)
-Severe disease; hospitalized but recovered
-Bravo flu surveillance system that randomly picked up this severe case
…
This is why H5N1 in livestock is such a notable development in the H5N1 saga:
- H5N1 in wild birds: no/few mammalian adaptations + low human handling = low risk (but ecologically devastating)
- H5N1 in poultry: no/few mammalian adaptations + high human handling = some risk (the only other human H5N1 case so far was a poultry worker in CO in 2022; vast majority of global human cases also worked directly with poultry)
- H5N1 in wild mammals: mammalian adaptations + low human handling = some risk, but limited
- H5N1 in livestock: mammalian adaptations + high human handling = really bad situation

So we did a thing @CDCgov - since arriving there I've become slightly obsessed with waste water measurement.....yes💩......we lead the world in how to detect several different kinds of viral activity weeks before they show up in more traditional data sources (labs, ED visits etc)
Move those holiday dinners outside and open the doors/windows. If you can’t afford to buy a fancy HEPA air filter, you can make a DIY version that has been shown to trap 99% of virus particles. Learn more about clean indoor air projects at @ASUBeingHuman: https://t.co/ST5e1HKUTy
Improving ventilation can help reduce the risk of #COVID19 spreading at your holiday gatherings. You can keep windows open, use exhaust fans, and use air purifiers. A breath of fresh air for a safer celebration.

The AIDE lab was on the road yesterday bringing public health to the Florence Public Library to work with homeschooled children and their families. Just in time as RSV, flu and COVID-19 are on the rise again. Thanks to @TeaKuP@BrownStemGirl for leading the session.
Huge congrats to Dr. Maureen Dykinga for successfully defending her DrPH degree today @UAZPublicHealth. Her work focuses on authentically engaging youth in research.
