@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto That's probably true though i think it stands that it didnt hurt the film too much (at least not financially). It's probably rarer though, I wouldnt argue much with that. Some of my favourite performances are pretty hammy so it's kinda tough to call them "objectively" bad lol
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto in the full quote he acknowledges all of the crews efforts and says they deserve to be recognized, whereas here it reads as though he's endorsing how things work, and because people like him they're more eager to run with it and call her entitled/naive/etc.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto Yeah I don't think anyone should be legally entitled to retroactive equity or anything like that. It's more a case of how things are vs the changes we'd like to see. The framing of the original tweet is a bit sinister as it makes his reply look way more dismissive than it was.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto If you wanted a more grounded example, a film like Searching has pretty stilted acting but is elevated by the editing and rather clever presentation
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto I'd actually argue production absolutely can save sub-par performance. In some cases the sub-par performance becomes incorporated into the identity of a film. Ironically I think Revenge of the Sith is a pretty good example of this
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto As one creative receives his due recognition and fortune, anything more (especially for less universally understood role) comes off as merely greedy and pushing it. In reality there's a high chance she gets blacklisted for even advocating for change, no matter how polite she was.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto financial risk, but little is said of the risk of working in a brutal industry in hopes of exposure. Similarly, I think the conversation changes a LOT if Curry weren't also a smaller creator. I think him getting his flowers overshadows a lot of the discussion.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto Yeah I can see that now, honestly I don't think it's dumb at all. Bro I watch fucking pro wrestling I'm a sucker for crude storytelling no matter how many people try to diminish it's worth, doesn't change how it makes me feel lol
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto I don't hold any individual at fault necessarily but at the same time I don't think the art director is either. It reads to me as a call to action and critique of the industry as a whole more than singling out the director for benefitting the most
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto the way we perceive elements we may have thought to be objectively good/bad. The industry has its own ideas on what the objective value of each element may be, but almost every creative in the industry is quick to uphold the their peers. I think that's more than just courtesy.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto I think at the end of the day the formula is just not as simple as it's assumed to be. I think comparing it to food is a bit reductive but I see it like eating at a restaurant compared to eating at home. Yes on paper it may be the same, but a change in environment can change
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto I agree with that, but I think $7000 to $300 million is still fucking insane. It's such a tiny sliver that I don't fault anyone for feeling upset by that. Even if you understand that's how the world works I don't think there's anything wrong with calling for change.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto The reason Inde Navarette is likely to find more success than an art director is that her face is literally front and centre of the product, whereas other work such as art direction, sound design, cinematography, even editing are often consumed subconciously
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto Just because someone ascribes success to the effective mascot of a product doesn't mean it's not carried in part by the other elements. Even a good performance can be let down if presented poorly.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto The reason Inde Navarette is likely to find more success than an art director is that her face is literally front and centre of the product, whereas other work such as art direction, sound design, cinematography, even editing are often consumed subconciously
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto Except none of this changes how you seem to think this is a formula that can be replicated easily in film. Even here you downplay the success of Star Wars as just the hero's journey in space lol. Say nothing of the artistic vision of George Lucas and his collaborators!
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto "What drives people to buy tickets?" in this case it was word of mouth, which only comes from people who saw the film and said it was good. You know what contributes to a film being good? The short answer is something more cohesive than bad production with a good director.
@PatekMahomes@Taskah60@Dexerto And again, your problem is how much you're still leaning on the amount she got paid to quantify her value. Indie film is incredibly fucking cutthroat. A bigger resume doesn't represent your contribution to the piece you work on. Presuming it's marginal by default is asinine.
