Cherry Orchard Hospital heating update. 20/11/24

Last night, despite freezing temperatures, only two residents at Cherry Orchard Hospital were provided with plug-in heaters. This decision was made after repeated complaints from their families (on behalf of all residents)

The remaining residents in four multi-occupancy rooms were left without any heating.

When families realised this last night, they contacted the hospital, only to be initially told that their loved ones had heaters. However, upon further inspection, it was admitted that these residents had not received any heating despite freezing temperatures.

A meeting with hospital management today revealed a disturbing lack of care. When confronted about the heating issue, management claimed to have asked residents—many of whom lack the capacity to make such decisions—if they wanted a heater, to which they allegedly replied no. This is deeply concerning, especially for individuals with dementia living in an unheated facility.

While the heating is currently functional, management can not guarantee when the issue will be permanently resolved. Additionally, they admitted that family concerns, raised to the social worker, were not escalated to them for over a week.

Despite the temporary relief, the underlying problems remain. The relocation process last year, which forced residents out of their single comfortable rooms and resulted in a significant loss of life, raises serious questions about the hospital's priorities and decision-making. The financial investment in this unit, coupled with the ongoing failures to meet basic human needs, demands a thorough investigation.

Families remain unconvinced that the issues have been adequately addressed. The HSE's only commitment is to provide two hourly check-ins to ensure residents are warm. This is an unacceptable breach of human rights. Elderly and immobile individuals should not be subjected to such harsh conditions in their home, especially in the heart of winter.

Cherry Orchard Heating Update.

Despite repeated complaints over the past week, older patients at Cherry Orchard Hospital are still enduring cold conditions. Yesterday, after escalating the issue to higher levels within the HSE, the heating was temporarily restored. However, it has since failed again, leaving residents under blankets with some displaying symptoms of cold such as cough and sniffles. Residents, despite some having cognitive impairment, are expressing that they are cold.

In response to further complaints today, management provided duvets & Plug-in heaters ONLY to the rooms of the two families who raised the complaints on behalf of all the family group. The other four multi occupancy rooms have NO heater on a night like tonight of freezing temperatures. This is a shocking state of affairs, especially considering the 1.7 million euro investment in the unit to relocate patients from allegedly unsafe, warm, single-room accommodations.

We are demanding that heaters are provided to ALL rooms immediately.

The HSE has promised to resolve the heating issue by tomorrow, but families are sceptical, having heard similar assurances for a week. They are demanding immediate action and fear that another Christmas may be spent on picket lines due to the HSE's repeated failures.

Ireland's housing system is in a state of disrepair, primarily due to ineffective Government policies.

My graphic illustrates the large number of vacant and derelict properties in Dublin City. It also shows the 4,666 entire houses or apartments currently listed for short-term letting on the Airbnb platform, with a total of 18,649 across Ireland.

Homelessness in Ireland has reached another new record high, with 14,760 people homeless and relying on emergency homeless accommodation, including 4,561 children from 2,133 families, according to the latest figures released by the Department of Housing. The Government failed to meet its social and affordable housing targets by 2,680 homes last year and significantly underestimated the number of houses needed to be built annually by 17,000. It's widely accepted that Ireland requires up to 50,000 additional houses each year; however, the government's "Housing for All" plan only aims to build an average of 33,000.

The 2022 Census shows that the country has 166,752 vacant homes and 66,135 empty holiday homes. Interestingly, nearly a third of these vacant homes (48,387) have been unoccupied long-term since 2016.

Predictably, rent has doubled over the past 13 years and house prices have surged by 55%, marking the fastest growth in any major EU economy. Currently, Vulture funds own 1 in 6 mortgages in the Irish housing market, while Cuckoo funds and the State purchase 42% of new homes. This situation has led to a record number of first-time buyers competing for the smallest supply of housing stock in over a decade.

Nationally, just over 11,000 homes are available for purchase, a stark contrast to 2012 when 60,000 homes were on the market. To add to the crisis, the income needed to buy a new home in Dublin is €127,000, which surpasses even a TD's basic salary of €108,987.

Consequently, 68% of people in their late 20s still live with their parents, a figure that is nearly 26% higher than the EU average of 42.1%.
