I have to live with this reality EVERY day. My daughter lost out on so much because I gave everything (including my mental and physical health) to my schools. She got the leftovers and they were not good.

It’s a difficult thing to live with, and each year in my retirement only makes me feel it more. If I could do it all over again, I’d do it so different.

Except an occasional reach out from a former student or parent, I got NOTHING out of giving everything to families other than my own. Not a single parent or student, or teacher, or district blinked (or thanked me beyond superficially) when I retired. Not a single one could ever understand what I sacrificed as they continued to demand more and more from me.

I made so many lives better, except for my own daughter’s. I did so much to help families, except my own. I have to live with this. I’ve admitted this to my daughter and it still brings me pain and regret, though she forgives me.

I spend my weekdays now caring for my grandson with the hope that this help can at least go a little way toward giving to my daughter what she should have had herself growing up. It is the best experience of my life being with my grandson daily.

Use my experience or ignore it. But I’m here to tell you my sacrifices for students and families as a career public educator were not worth it and no one can convince me otherwise.

@omgsidewalks Agree 100%! I just retired and and knew how it was going to be…no thank yous, no appreciation for all the years & hours of sacrifice & was replaced within hours. 30 years of teaching, coaching & being an AP and I got a retirement blanket! I laugh but it’s really not funny

@FixingEducation As an educator for 30 years, suspensions are necessary not just for what you mention but to put the burden back on the parents who are the only ones who could change the behaviors. Until schools make it hurt for the parent nothing ever changes and sometimes it still doesn’t!
