🐤: When I asked, "What is my name?", they told me, "Leeteuk."
I cried immediately. "Leeteuk"? Not even "E.T."... what kind of name is "Leeteuk"? I really cried a lot. I said, "I won't debut, I can't promote and work under the name Leeteuk."

At that time, the members teased me so much: "Isn't it E.T.? E.T." I think Yesung teased me the most, I still remember. He said, "Woah! Hyung, what are you going to do? What are you going to do?" while my tears were falling... I said, "Ah, I really can't do this, what is Leeteuk? What is E.T.?"
However, since a dinner meeting was already scheduled, I decided to ask to change the name during that dinner. I sat next to Teacher Lee Soo-man. It was while we were eating grilled tripe (yangdaechang) or something like that... I don't remember the exact name of the restaurant, but I remember its location clearly.

When we met and started eating, I wanted to take the chance and said, "Teacher, but... isn't Leeteuk..."
At that time, I had a few names that I brought with me, as my mother had gone to naming centers and brought me several options. Among them was the name "Sehyun", "Sehyun-i", and there was a name starting with "Ye...", about three names in total.

I asked him, "What do you think of names like these?"
He said, "No, Leeteuk. Isn't the name Leeteuk so great?"
So I asked him, "What meaning does the name Leeteuk carry for it to be this nice?"
He replied, "Hey! Kangta was like that, Junjin was like that, and Hyesung was like that... Aren't their names so cool? Didn't they love their names when I named them? They liked them very much. And you will like it too, right? Don't you like it?"
I told him, "Yes, but... don't you think the name Leeteuk or E.T. sounds a bit heavy or sharp to pronounce? Will it be suitable?"
He said, "No, it's a great name. It means (the special kid in this world). Leeteuk... isn't it great? The special kid in this world. This name carries a very beautiful meaning. You are going to become a special person in this world. Your seniors (sunbaes) loved the names I chose for them, and you will like yours too, right?"
So I answered, "Yes..."

Then I went back to the dorm that day, and I think it was Yesung - according to my memory it was Yesung - who asked me, "Hyung, what happened?"
I told him, "It's over... I couldn't change it."
When the teacher asks you, "Isn't it pretty? Your seniors loved it so much, and you will like it too, right?"... who could say to his face, "I hate it so much, I can't do it"? He put me in a situation where I had no choice but to agree. As long as he said my seniors loved it and I would like it too, I had no choice but to say, "Ah... yes, it's really great."

And because of that, even though it's a stage name, I have been working and promoting under this name for 21 consecutive years.
But what I like about it is that I have my real name, and whenever I need to write my name somewhere I can use my real name, so I think that's a good thing.

👤: So, after finishing your music show promotions, how did it feel?
🦚: Oh, the generation gap is huge now. The age difference between us and the newer idols is basically like the gap between parents and their children, so it’s honestly very embarrassing. Even when they come over to greet us, we just awkwardly say, “Oh, hello! You’re the best, you’re the best!” and then run away.
👤: You’ve reached the age where you finally understand why your senior artists acted that way back then.
🦚: Exactly. There’s a girl group in our company called Hearts2Hearts, and one of the members, Ina, has a mother who’s the same age as us.
🐤: That’s right. Even if people called us fathers, it wouldn’t be strange anymore.
👤: There are a lot of moments like that these days, aren’t there?
🐤: Yeah, and the gap just keeps getting bigger. The parents of trainees nowadays were born in the ’90s.
👤: Oh my… that’s a big deal.
🐤: Coming here and talking about things like this… the aging of the entertainment industry really is a serious issue.
👤: And there’s no retirement or welfare system for it.
🐤: Exactly. I feel like Super Junior has raised the average age of idols quite a bit, so I’d like to sincerely apologize for that.

🦚: These days we get a lot of encouragement like, “Keep going! Stay strong!”
👤: It feels like everyone is cheering you on, saying, “Wow, they’re really working hard.”

🐤: They always say, “Don’t let our oppas get discouraged,” and they come to support us too.

🐤: It really is. Each one of those fans feels like a hundred people. We’re growing older together now.
🦚: Longtime fans are different. These days, fans use LED signs instead of handmade placards. So when we see people still holding handmade signs…
👤: They made them themselves!
🦚: That’s how you know they’re longtime fans, and they’re incredibly precious to Super Junior.
🐤: Actually, at our recent fansign, our fans are getting older too, so many of them aren’t familiar with buying tickets online. A lot of them told me, “Oppa, I couldn’t come because I didn’t know how to book the tickets.”
👤: So after being a veteran group for so long, you launched a brand new subunit and spent your first week promoting as rookies. How did that happen?
🐤: We had just finished our 20th anniversary concert tour, and for the encore concerts we wanted to do something different. We wanted to perform as subunits, but Heechul didn’t have one. He said, “Then I just won’t participate.” But I couldn’t let him sit out, so I told him, “Let’s do something together.” Then Shindong heard us and said, “Then you two should just form a unit together!” And that’s how our subunit was created.
👤: What was your relationship like? Were you always close?
🐤: No, we weren’t.
👤: Because you didn’t really understand each other back then?
🐤: As everyone knows from the “Great Incheon Incident” about ten years ago, we had a huge fight at Incheon Munhak Stadium.
👤: It was complete chaos!
🐤: It really was! But as we got older, we gradually started understanding each other better.
👤: Right, you probably don’t even have the energy to fight anymore. Did you enjoy working together as a duo?
🦚: I absolutely loved it! And Leeteuk gave me a lot of authority and freedom to lead.
👤: So who’s the leader of the unit?
🐤: Heechul.

Q: You previously performed as a special duo at concerts, and now you've officially debuted as a subunit. Can you tell us how the unit was formed and how you feel about officially promoting together?

🐤: At first, neither Heechul nor I expected this at all. We had no idea things would grow this big.
🦚: That's right.
🐤: But once we started working together, we had so much fun making this album. As for how the unit was formed...
🦚: It actually happened while we were working together. At first, we were preparing for SUPER SHOW.
🐤: We were getting ready for the encore concert.
🦚: Right. We needed subunit performances, but I realized I was the only one without a subunit. So I said, "It's okay, you can leave me out." Then I think Shindong said, "No way! Hyung, why don't you form a duo with Leeteuk hyung?" We quickly started working on songs together, and as we continued, someone suggested, "Why don't you officially promote as a subunit?" That's how it all happened.
🐤: That's exactly right.

Q: Besides both being born in 1983, you have very different personalities and working styles. While preparing for the concert and album, was there a moment when those differences created great chemistry? Or any funny moment that made you realize you worked together better than expected?

🦚: Even during recording, Leeteuk trusted me a lot and left many things to me. Since his vocal range is higher and he's better at high notes, he handled all the high parts.
🐤: I think our biggest strength is that we're completely different. Every meeting, we come up with different ideas, which gives us more perspectives and makes the final result richer.
🦚: The funniest thing is that before every meeting, he tells me, "Heechul, just do whatever you want." But once the meeting starts and I explain all my ideas, he suddenly says, "Hmm... I think I'd rather do it this way." Then why did you ask me to say everything?
🐤: I was just sharing my own thoughts.
🦚: Fair enough.
🐤: Exactly.

Q: Please introduce your debut mini album *Promise*, including the title track and the meaning behind the album.

🐤: *Promise* combines the music and emotions that Heechul and I loved while growing up in elementary and middle school with the feelings of today's generation.
These days, many songs focus on simple lyrics and repetitive beats, but our title track puts more emphasis on delivering a clear message of hope through its lyrics and melody.
If you listen to it while imagining yourself as the main character in a coming-of-age drama, I think you'll enjoy it even more.
🦚: That's right.

Q: Your first Asia Fan-Con tour is coming up soon. How do you take care of your health, stay in shape, and relieve stress?

🦚: Honestly, I don't feel much stress. Preparing for 83z has been exciting because we've received so much love from our fans, so I've been happy throughout the whole process.
🐤: Whenever I don't have any schedules, I spend most of my time at the golf course.
🦚: Ah, so that's how you relieve stress.
🐤: Yes. I just hit lots of golf balls.

Q: You'll be performing in Kaohsiung and Taipei this October and November. Do you have a message for E.L.F. who are worried about getting tickets?

Q: While preparing for this unit, is there a “Promise” you hope the other person will keep?

🐤: There’s no particular promise I want him to keep. Honestly, I’m just happy whenever we’re together.

🦚: I just hope Leeteuk stays healthy and never gets sick.

Q: Was there a moment, like the passion described in SOLOVE, when you were once again impressed by each other’s dedication?

🐤: I was really impressed by Heechul’s passion when I saw him actively sharing ideas, communicating quickly, and organizing everything in the group chat for the production of 83z.

🦚: I could really feel Leeteuk’s passion when he kept listening to our songs in the car, even before they were mixed, when they only contained our recorded vocals.

Q: When you had to face your own “Bad Name,” what words or actions from each other brought you the most comfort?

🐤: Heechul has always told me, “No matter what decision you make or what you want to say, I’ll support you. Just say what you truly want.” Those words have always given me a lot of strength.

🦚: Whether it was during this album or at any other time, Leeteuk always tells me, “Heechul, just do everything you want to do.” Those words always comfort me.

Q: When one of you went into “Lonely Man” mode, did the other ever help lift your spirits?

🐤: The loneliest time in my life was right before I enlisted in the military. Back then, Heechul told me I needed to go out and spend time with friends, and he was the one who got me out of that lonely state.

🦚: That’s right. Spending time with friends really lifts your mood. (laughs)

Q: Please share a message of love for E.L.F., who have stayed by your side just like ONSAEMIRO.

🐤: To our E.L.F. who have been with us for the past 22 years, the reason we’re able to do interviews like this and share our stories is because you’ve always stayed by our side. Just as you’ve been with us for 22 years, I hope you’ll stay with us for the next 22 years as well. I love you!

🦚: I want to keep singing and performing for the rest of my life wherever our E.L.F. are. That’s my dream.

Q: “The friendship of 83z is stronger than love.”

🐤: I actually said this recently in our group chat too, and I truly mean it from the bottom of my heart. Stay healthy, and let’s live a long life together.

🐤: I’ve wanted to say this for a while. I first became aware of it after reading fans’ letters.
It’s strange. I don’t know if this person went from being a fan to an anti, or if they were never really a fan to begin with. Maybe that’s an odd way to put it.

During my career, there are naturally fans I remember. People who support me, encourage me, and do kind things leave an impression on me. During live broadcasts, out of gratitude, I might say things like, “Oh, I heard you had a baby,” or “I heard this happened to you.” It’s a very normal way of communicating with fans.

But after seeing that, it seems someone became jealous or developed some other kind of negative feeling.

When I hear stories from these fans, I always think that if we all love Leeteuk together, shouldn’t we be able to enjoy that together and talk about positive things? Instead, it feels like, “Only I can love you, and I don’t want anyone else to.” Or even, “If I can’t have you, then neither can anyone else.”

They engage in what is essentially cyberbullying, leaving hurtful comments and causing a lot of distress. It doesn’t seem to be directed at just one person either. They appear to target different fans who support and care about me, one after another.
I’m not completely sure who it is, but I do have some guesses.

I sincerely hope they stop. Wouldn’t it be much better if fans could simply enjoy their time together? I genuinely don’t understand why they do this.

What are they hoping to achieve? Do they want me to fail? Or is it jealousy, like, “I don’t even like him, but why does Leeteuk remember you?”
Honestly, I don’t know the exact reason.

🐤: Yesterday, I talked about someone who has been harassing and hurting people around me by leaving malicious comments. But after speaking about it, I realized it wasn’t just one or two people. Many people in different places have been affected by this behavior.

If you come across people like that, please just block them. If they’re caught later, I won’t let it slide.

What’s upsetting is that they don’t attack me directly. Instead, they target the fans who support me, spreading negativity and telling others not to like me. Please don’t let that affect you.

As I always say, your own life should come first. Isn’t that what will truly make you happy? The moment we stop living our own lives, we become unhappy.

I’m simply someone who fills a small space in your day when you’re tired, exhausted, bored, want to laugh, or have nothing to do. You are the main character of your own life, not me.

I hope I can be a bonus in your life that helps you feel a little happier and healthier. But if I ever become the center of your life to the point that it makes you unhappy, then I think something has gone wrong.

💬: Heechul said he wants to marry you Would you accept?

🐤: Heechul now? Sure, I wouldn’t mind. But the old Heechul? If I were a woman, I definitely couldn’t have put up with him. He was always playing games. If you asked him to come eat, go out, or do anything together, he’d always reply, “I’ll play first.” He was like that all the time.

I never expected that Kim Mu-yeol and Leeteuk had served together in the military, and that one quietly stayed by the other’s side, helping him get through that difficult period of service. Leeteuk’s words, “Thank you, my brother Mu-yeol, for helping me smile the way I do now,” were truly touching and deeply moving.

Actor Kim Mu-yeol has recently gained a great deal of attention for his performance in the Korean drama The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call. While many viewers have come to associate him with a strong and tough image, he is in fact an incredibly warm-hearted person with a gentle and sensitive nature.
