Together, we've already made meaningful progress.
Now let's help the remaining eight horses find the solutions they need.
In just the first 12 hours, the community has already helped secure solutions for three additional horses.
That means 17 of the 25 Thoroughbreds identified in this Texas feedlot situation are now considered out of immediate danger.
But we're not done yet.
Seven broodmares and one gelding still need funding, quarantine space, permanent homes, or a combination of all three before the June 5 deadline.
A tremendous amount of credit belongs to @BTREGail , which has been leading this effort from the beginning—coordinating placements, securing homes, matching horses with resources, and helping bring together the many moving pieces required to get horses safely out of the feedlot.
Mareworthy's role is different.
We are helping raise awareness, keep people informed, connect resources, and support Beyond the Roses however we can. While we do not currently have the capacity to take horses from this group, we can still help connect the people who do.
One of the biggest lessons from situations like this is that saving a horse isn't just about raising money.
Every successful outcome requires three pieces of the puzzle:
🏠 A permanent home
🩺 Quarantine space
💰 Funding
When those three pieces come together, a horse can move safely into its next chapter.

🚨 24 Thoroughbred broodmares were identified at a kill pen in the Texas Panhandle. While 14 mares have now moved on to other situations, 10 mares still urgently need help before they are scheduled to ship to slaughter on June 5. Right now, there are three ways you can
Most people never see what happens to Thoroughbred mares after breeding.
Some quietly retire into safe homes.
Some are passed from sale to sale.
Some end up one step away from slaughter.
That’s why Mareworthy exists.
We are dedicated to protecting retired Thoroughbred broodmares through sanctuary, placement, and education while helping create a future where these mares are valued beyond what they can produce.
Because being a mother to champions should never end in uncertainty.
Visit the website to meet the mares, learn their stories, and see how you can help rewrite what retirement looks like for Thoroughbred broodmares.

A huge shout out to the incredible women of the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) board who recently hosted a luncheon. The group discussed TCA's current aftercare goals and initiatives.
Thank you ladies, for your great work! 👏

Well said @craigbrogden! The average age a racehorse retires is 5. That means the majority of their lives are spent doing something OTHER than racing. That's why creating opportunities for them in the equestrian world is vital to their well-being and that of our industry.
The thoroughbred sport horse is coming back. This amazing breed has a 2nd long career after racing. There is a huge movement building to make them fashionable in the hunter jumper world again.
Retired broodmares can make incredible companions. Many are calm, experienced, people-oriented horses that settle into second careers beautifully. After years of giving to others, they often thrive with consistency, turnout, and someone who simply enjoys them for who they are.
Kentucky Derby hero GOLDEN TEMPO's dam CARRUMBA seen here was pretty smart herself. Seen here with Jose Ortiz.
How cool is that.
Jose rode both mom and son to victory.
History has been made!!🌹
Cherie DeVaux has shattered the glass ceiling at the Kentucky Derby, becoming the first woman to ever train a winner in the Run for the Roses.
Congratulations to Cherie and the entire Golden Tempo team on an unforgettable victory!! 🏆

If you’ve ever tuned in to the Kentucky Derby broadcast, then you’ve seen Donna Barton Brothers on horseback, interviewing the winning jockey. This year will be Donna's last year doing so, as she's retiring after this year's Derby.

@52ShadesOfHay If Thoroughbreds had second career demand as sport horses as much as they do Racehorses, we would not need lifecare funds because there would be riders that wanted them and people to show, train, compete with them. That is my solution and we’re working hard towards it.

Sometimes @wasabiaftercare does the seeking, and other times people seek us. Recently, we heard from Alexis, that former @WasabiStables runner, Nancy R, is a lesson horse. We received some new photos and look forward to more updates on her!
While the racing and broodmare careers didn't work out for this girl, I have a feeling the third time will be a charm for her as a sport horse!
She is "Willing," both in name and in spirit. 💕

Multiple Peruvian G1 winner and Champion Juliana gave us a beautiful (and big!) More Than Looks colt last month.
He plays hard, sleeps hard and has developed a talent for "horizontal grazing"
