@BHNFT_SLT We've been thinking a lot recently about how best to help learn speech strategies (e.g. one or several, the importance of cognition, behaviour change) - anything to share from your experience of this aspect of strategy use?
“Stroke survivors are self-motivated to make meaningful change […] but clinicians often lack optimism when speaking to stroke survivors and discussing their goals.”
To reduce secondary stroke risk, clinicians need to be more encouraging, said Dr Olive Lennon at #UKSF24.
Currently, 1 in 7 strokes are young stroke.
But strokes in people under 55 are increasing at a higher rate than in older people… and the prognosis of stroke in younger patients is “not benign”.
“Worrying change in epidemiology of younger stroke”.

Stroke survivor, Pippa Faunce-Smith, who has aphasia, outlined a few issues that damages the wellbeing of those in recovery.
▪️Feeling told off.
▪️Talked about.
▪️Not listened to.
▪️Not supported to communicate.
“Notice the person, not just the deficit.” #UKSF24
At #UKSF24 Professor Gillian Mead spoke about bespoke palliative care for stroke patients.
“Early discussions about likely outcome could be more direct.
“Important to be open to what families are saying.
“Even as a senior clinician, I still find these conversations difficult.”
@claudiadreads@RCSLT The #ICAP literature has some good group ideas, the #aphasia reading book groups too as well and what about a digital aphasia rehab (apps) group? (might also be worth a post on the "other platform" as growing aphasia community there...)
I’m looking for an SLT student or assistant to work with a client with global aphasia under my supervision once a week for at least 6 months. Client is in Hertfordshire. Please DM me if interested. Will be paid for time and travel!
Very pleased to have this paper in Aphasiology. We analysed first-hand descriptions of inner speech written by people with aphasia to shed light on theoretical and clinical questions. https://t.co/ZwL7T8Bp4S
50 free copies: A modified intensive, comprehensive aphasia program (mICAP) has better reported outcomes than usual care: a randomized controlled trial https://t.co/ZQCuuRMXrw.
Honestly, next time a clinician tells you that no further recovery is possible beyond a year or so after your #stroke, ask them to explain the science behind their view. Some discussion of the 'plateau' from 16:45 here https://t.co/J00ueiHnsA… @PTcoach@M_j_G13@KnowStroke_Pod
It was a real privilege and great fun to discuss our Better Conversations with Aphasia therapy with Jonathan and Rob, helping people with #aphasia & families/friends to enjoy talking again @RCSLT@UCLLangCog @ClinicUCL @UCLPALS@UCLBrainScience
There are SO FEW efficacious therapies available for people with Wernicke's aphasia and/or lack of insight. This is awesome @jenmozeiko !!! https://t.co/YFG5iW8eOS
LUNA has a new celestial spin-off project (satellite project?) called MARS, looking at using machine analysis to support clinicians to work with discourse assessment and treatment planning. Jet over to @MarsAphasia to find out more 🪐 🪐 🪐
