Amazing news this morning! The Nobel Prize has been awarded to Professors @KarlDeisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for discoveries and work on ion channels that led to and helped drive the field of optogenetics.
My own memories with optogenetics go back to my work introducing this technique in my former lab at @UWMadison and to my direct and productive interactions with Karl and his lab.
Since then, and throughout my work in industry, #optogenetics has probably been one of the words I use most frequently. Probably every day, mostly a couple of times a day!
Some ideas seem obvious only after someone has the courage to imagine them. For me, that is part of the magic of optogenetics. The leap from studying channelrhodopsin to expressing it in neurons and use light to control their activity required both courage and ingenuity. That seemingly simple idea transformed neuroscience.
Optogenetics is helping us unravel the mysteries of the brain in academic labs and is inspiring industries to pursue translational applications.
Many people have contributed to the development of optogenetics, but seeing the field recognized at this level is incredibly meaningful. https://t.co/pnqYm13Lu8
