‘Carney, 43, who had moved with her daughter from Westchester County, N.Y., to Ireland in 2021, suffered multiple severe wounds to her head and was believed to have died from the brutal attack from her new boyfriend — but officials later confirmed she died from suffocation.’

‘The man used his own passport for travel. All applicants for international protection must surrender their passports to the International Protection Office at the time of making their application.
It is understood this man's passport had been returned to him as he had been granted subsidiary protection, which is a status given to asylum seekers who do not meet the strict legal definition of a refugee but who would face the risk of serious harm if they were sent back to their own country.’

In Ireland, if you are a plain old Irish man who murders your partner (and there are plenty of those) you are named by the police and the media. There is no special treatment for this man (unless by identifying him it identifies a minor.) But if you are part of the protected class of people – namely asylum seekers – then you are special. You cannot be identified if you are applying for asylum and also murder your partner. You can go on the run, safe in the knowledge that not even the police force will name you or put out a photo of you, and all the media outlets must go along with this.
