Five years ago, one of the most devastating storms to hit the Gulf Coast and the US, Hurricane Michael, wreaked havoc on towns in Florida’s panhandle, including our Red Cross office in Panama City. Some towns are still recovering a half-decade later.

William and his wife evacuated as Hurricane Idalia made landfall, knowing that their coastal neighborhood would be affected by storm surge. After the storm, they returned home to find that floodwaters had risen several feet into their home, above their electrical outlets.

We’re working w/ county, state and federal officials to ensure help is available when & where people need it most in the aftermath of #Idalia. Information gathered from these damage assessments helps inform operational decisions about where to deploy services in the coming days.

More than 400 Red Crossers are on the ground providing comfort and relief to people impacted by #Idalia. An additional 200 Red Crossers are traveling to support sheltering and relief efforts.
