Meet Our K9 Unit: Officer Michael Polston & K9 Mattis

The Malden Police Department is proud to spotlight our K9 Unit, currently comprised of Officer Michael Polston and his K9 partner, Mattis — a seven year-old male German Shepherd imported from the Czech Republic.

Graduates of the Rhode Island K9 Academy in 2018, Officer Polston and Mattis continue to train monthly with the Massachusetts State Police. Mattis is highly skilled and certified in narcotics detection, criminal apprehension, missing and wanted person searches, article and building searches, and handler protection.

Their certifications include the American Police Canine Association and the New England State Police Certification and Standards. Since 2004, our K9 Unit has been instrumental in numerous arrests, drug seizures, and the recovery of illegally obtained cash, vehicles, and property.

You may have seen their newly outfitted Chevrolet Tahoe, which is purpose-built for K9 operations and features sharp custom graphics by 428 Graphics Inc

In addition to criminal enforcement, the K9 Unit supports our Traffic Division with proactive patrols and plays a key role in community engagement events throughout the city and beyond.

We thank Officer Polston and Mattis for their ongoing dedication to public safety and their support of neighboring law enforcement agencies across Greater Boston.
