An American university student, Will Nguyen, was present during the protests and decided to join in. Nguyen was arrested and all his belongings were confiscated from his host home.
When the police came to shut down the protests, the protests became violent. The police started beating the protestors to get them to stop. Some of the protestors began to riot and loot stores. About 100 people have been arrested and detained for being a part of the protests
On June 9th, Vietnamese citizens organized mass protests throughout the country through Facebook. The protests spread and continued for days. Protestors marched through streets carrying signs that urged their government to not lease land to China.
Vietnamese citizens are worried that the companies that will set up in these special economic zones will be Chinese or of Chinese interest. The citizens are worried that China will have too much power in Vietnam once again.
Right now the Vietnamese government is planning to set up 3 special economic zones which will last for 99 years. Special economic zones are areas that have special business and trade laws that make it easy for companies to set up in those areas to boost the economy.
So a lot of you may not know what’s going on in Vietnam right now but it’s important to the people of Vietnam. China and Vietnam have a long history of political tension and China has invaded and colonized Vietnam multiple times throughout history.
