A Different Independence Day in Northeast India
Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, Independence Day in the Northeast wasnโt about flags on bikes or kids running around in school playgrounds.
It was about caution โ with bandhs declared, bomb blasts announced by various organisations, and an unspoken understanding that August 15 was better spent indoors.
For many of us, our celebration was limited to watching a loop of patriotic Bollywood movies on TV, imagining freedom through the lens of cinema.
Today, things have changed. The streets are alive. Kids are out playing local football tournaments, adults are cruising through bike rallies, and the entire neighbourhood treats August 15 like a proper festival. Itโs loud, colourful, and for the first time in decades, free from that old lingering fear.
And yetโฆ somewhere in my head, one worry remains โ will Genda Swamiโs atom bomb be defused in time by Brigadier Suryadev in Tirangaa? Because some Independence Day traditions, you never outgrow.
๐จ BREAKING: Aarini Lahoty becomes the youngest female FIDE-rated player of ๐ฎ๐ณ India! ๐

The more I read Dostoevsky, the more I want to know him. There was a power cut the entire day, and it just came back about ten minutes ago. Without complaining about the heat, I sat, read, and read some more, occasionally pausing to watch the beautiful sunset. :)
Today I took a walk around the new place I moved to a few days ago, and I am already in love with its quiet, peaceful vibe and all the greenery around.
I first read this poem in 6th grade. It was the first poem I loved as a child, recited over and over again, and still love! :)
Today, while scrolling through my Instagram account, I found this video and couldn't stop myself from downloading it.
An absolute little wonder is rising from Indian chess. Just 9 years of age Sharvaanica AS has already crossed 2000 Elo. She is the highest rated amongst not just girls her age but also amongst boys under-10 in India. She is also no.1 rated in girls under-12! This just goes to show what a special talent this young girl is.
She trains her chess at the Hatsun Chess Academy. We wish her the best in her next aim of reaching 2200 Elo and becoming a WIM.
