After years of advocacy, the Assembly has the votes to pass a major bill to protect families from harassment via ACS/CPS — but they’re about to go home without voting on it. They have no excuse to avoid passing this.
Members of the Caucus joined @SenatorBrisport and other advocates to show their support for a package of family civil rights bills aimed to reform CPS Agencies in New York State. #ADemandForJustice.
1/ Subjecting pregnant people and newborns to medically unnecessary drug testing without their consent is troublingly widespread in our state.
This practice harms pregnant people, infants, and families, and it has no place in New York.

1/ Governor Hochul's veto of the Preserving Family Bonds Act overlooked the voices of children and families impacted by the foster system and their advocate.
We're calling on the legislature to override her veto.
1/ @NYCLU has found that while 23% of NYC’s population is Black, Black children make up 38% of ACS reports & 52% of removals.
When ACS decides to formally file a case against a parent in family court, 41% of the time it is against a Black parent. https://t.co/f579jypHSM
new scoop from @michebocanegra: NYC's child welfare system is riddled with racial disparities that the agency in charge of protecting children has furthered through interventions that disproportionately affect Black families, a new analysis by @NYCLU finds https://t.co/DrQzFqmINx
NEW: A NYCLU analysis shows the alarming extent to which racism is baked into every stage of the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS)’s system.
The data confirms what we've long known—ACS treats Black families with more suspicion and less compassion at every chance.
.@GovKathyHochul: Families need the Preserving Family Bonds Act.
The bill will allow contact between a child and their parent after the termination of parental rights when it's in the child’s best interest.
Children deserve more love in their lives, not less. Sign this bill.
"The effort to destroy Native families stands out as uniquely genocidal. But... it’s a playbook we’ve seen over & over again in American history... it continues to roil through Black communities, communities of color, & poor communities in the guise of the “child welfare” system"
New: Despite publicly claiming to support a measure that would require child protective services agents to read people their rights, the city’s Administration for Children’s Services has privately proposed gutting the bill. https://t.co/gEbtE5loFS
The 2023 @BPHACaucus#PeoplesAgenda includes the Family Miranda Rights Act (S901/A1980) & the Informed Consent Act (S320/A109).
These bills are about racial justice. NYS, it's time to stand up for Black & Latine families.
@AndreaSCousins @CarlHeastie @SenGianaris
If New York leadership fails to see how non-consensual drug testing is destroying the reproductive freedoms of parents, then New York has no business calling itself a leader for reproductive justice.
@AndreaSCousins @CarlHeastie prioritize the Informed Consent Act (S320/A109)!
Session is almost over, but we're not done yet.
Tell your state representatives to pass bills that would help ensure sure parents can make informed decisions that best protect their families before case workers come bursting through their doors:

Black families in New York are 7x as likely as white families to be reported to the family regulation system and 13x more likely to have their kids removed.
Many of these families are reported for neglect, not abuse, which is often code for situations related to poverty.
Many people called legislators yesterday, and we will need to people to continue calling. It’s not over until it’s over, Don’t stop now. We are on are way to ACHIEVING the goal of ensuring families know their rights.
Pack the (virtual) house tomorrow, Wednesday, 4/19. To register and learn more about the Civil Rights investigation of antBlack racism in the New York family policing system -

NEW: Last night the 5th Circuit released an opinion in the case against the FDA's approval of mifepristone.
The ruling trades law + science for extremist ideology and sows chaos as part of a strategy to further disrupt access to reproductive health care.
