Every child faces challenges when heading back to school. But back-to-school time can be exceptionally difficult for the 20 percent of children who suffer from a mental health or learning disorder.
The school environment demands many things that summer activities don’t — the ability to sit still; get organized; stay on task; and adapt to a new, highly structured daily schedule. School also requires kids to separate from their parents and interact with peers — enormously challenging tasks for any child with anxiety.

I spent 4 pds today talking to a variety of classes about the power of mindfulness and meditation. We practiced meditation and talked about the physiological response our bodies have as a result. Ss want school wide meditation time. This is my purpose. @CroneSchool
Schools may think they want me to present on “bullying,” but after we talk, they get why that’s too narrow. To change kids’ behavior, we 1st need to normalize social churn, demystify popularity, operationalize kindness, help them assume good intent, & ID when & why they’re mean.
I am so excited to welcome Dr. Brooks Gibbs to @CroneSchool tmro to present to students and parents (6-7pm) on resiliency! Thanks to our district Peace grant! https://t.co/v50BjZIy7x @Couch_CroneMS@CronePTSA@ipsd204
@Pfagell Struggling explaining this to my own teen. I cannot understand how some kids can literally be so mean but then nice the next day. I said these are not your friends. But kids want friends.
I'm excited to announce that Dr. Brooks Gibbs is coming to Crone Middle School to present to students, staff and parents on Feb. 2! Information on the parent night is forthcoming! Check out more here.... https://t.co/BOW3v4I4LS @CroneSchool@CronePTSA

@LParker_PsyS I agree. We need to start early. Better SEL curriculums. We need more mental health providers in schools. As a school psych, most of my time now is spent doing evaluations. When I go into classrooms to talk about mental health the kids are yearning for more.
