"The president has failed asylum seekers—and jeopardized our commitment to justice—by refusing to implement safe and welcoming processes."
Infuriatingly, even truer today.

🚨#URGENT: The White House and Senate are negotiating a spending package that would trade components of our decades-old refugee protection system for foreign aid. This would have devastating impact on people in need of protection and immigrant communities throughout the country.
Shame on Congress members scheming to exploit global crises for crackdowns on refugees and long-term immigrants who've been contributing to the U.S. for decades. Real lives are affected, families torn apart—all under the guise of so-called border security.
"Today’s settlement doesn't repair the harm our government inflicted on children and families before, during or after the Trump Admin’s policy of separating families to prosecute asylum-seeking parents," said Jennifer Nagda, CPO at the Young Center, on a statement.🧵👇🏾
"We’re seeing an astonishing custody battle unfold...the case concerns the safety and well-being of an Afghan child who was taken from her family by a U.S. Marine, and is now at risk of being separated from her loved ones forever, unless action is taken immediately"

COMMENTARY: Ensuring Baby Doe can grow up with her Afghan family isn’t just about this one child. It is about protecting every child’s fundamental right to grow up connected to their family, heritage, culture and community. https://t.co/EVvareBB0y

Beloved mentor, devoted husband, jazz patron, and utterly unflappable jurist. Your clerks knew your measure, and loved you and Peggy dearly. We will miss the wisdom and humor you brought to our lives.
Longtime U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel, the former leader of the Illinois State Police who went on to preside over the corruption trial of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich has died. He was 82.

If Judge Hanen rules to end DACA following today’s oral arguments, the Biden Administration must be prepared to unapologetically defend DACA recipients like me and the thousands of people who were shut out from the program.
🚨Today, Judge Andrew Hanen in TX will hear oral arguments regarding the future of #DACA. The oral arguments come after the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Judge Hanen’s ruling stopping first-time DACA applications from being processed. 🧵👇🏾
Needed a story that would bring me some joy today. Found it!

Just devastating. As @JenniferNagda says: "There will never be a world where children are safe in jails." And kids with disabilities and health issues are especially vulnerable. Thinking of Anadith and her family tonight.
Children are never safe in jails. There are no "appropriate" conditions for jailing children. No parent should have to rely on their jailer to get medical attention for a sick child.

When people talk about family separation being a part of the process, this is the kind of issue they mean. This is something that happens with expedited removal. Period.
Today brought heartbreaking news that an immigrant child died this week after entering the United States as an unaccompanied child and being placed in government custody. Olivia Peña, co-director of the Young Center’s Child Advocate Program, issued the following statement.
24 hours, life or death, sounds pretty terrifying right? Cause it is. The point is to prevent counsel, because that means mass deportations. I don’t think they realize just how consequential this is. And how many bad stories will be front and center for the world to see.
The end of Title 42 should signal our country’s commitment to finally restoring the right to seek asylum. Instead, the Biden administration is set on replacing one failed policy with a host of others that will continue to put children, families, and adults in harm’s way.
The RGV Welcoming Committee released a statement in response to the tragedy in Brownsville today.
“We call on politicians and media to stop the vilification of immigrants. Above all, people like those harmed today are human beings with hopes and dreams.”
