Local news is collapsing. That is real. The answer is not a three-year, taxpayer-funded list of approved sources. A directory built to “help policymakers decide where interventions are needed” is an intervention. It tells editors what the government considers legitimate and tells readers which voices the state prefers

Canadians do not need Ottawa to curate their news diet. They need governments that stop treating journalism as a program to manage. Pay for it, rate it, or meddle in it and you no longer have a free press. You have a state-approved press on the payroll
