I have a friend who works as an assistant director, and he once told me something really similar to this. He also pointed out something else about kissing scenes that I found really interesting.
He said if actors don't have enough experience or aren't comfortable enough with their on screen partner, their kisses often have a very noticeable rhythm. Like, They press their lips together, then slightly separate for a moment before coming back in and pressing them together again. Then they repeat the same motion again and again quickly, almost like they're following a beat.
And a lot of the time, they'll also have a hand signal, like a tap on the shoulder or back, so both actors know when to switch the side of their face. Usually, they'll make the switch at exactly the same time, which make the kiss end up looking very synchronized and a little stiff.
He said real couples don't kiss like that. Like, they just react to each other. One person might be slow while the other comes in a little more intensely. Sometimes they might just press their lips together and stay there for a moment, taking in the feeling instead of immediately moving on to the next step.
Another thing he don't really like is when actors turn their faces way too far to the side because they're trying to avoid their noses touching. When they do that, their necks get stretched and their whole body position starts looking awkward and unnatural.
And ever since I learned about this, I've started noticing it everywhere, especially in BL and GL. You could probably pick almost any series, watch the kissing scenes, and you'll see some version of this synchronized, almost choreographed movement.
So, I think I finally understand why these kinds of kissing scenes have always bothered me. 😂
Recuerdan cuando Thomas besó a Kong cuando eso no estaba en el guion y el director les gritó: Quién les dijo que se besaran? 😭😭😭
Es que Thomas es un actor de método
