As an Irish woman, I never thought I'd reach the point where I feel nervous walking alone, hiking alone, or constantly looking over my shoulder.
I used to consider myself quite liberal. I believed the concerns many people raised about immigration were over exaggerated. Then I was accosted by a man who was in the country illegally while working out in my local gym. It shook me enough that I stopped going and invested in gym equipment for my home instead.
That isn't normal. Women should be able to exercise, walk, and enjoy their communities without feeling unsafe or having to change their lives because they no longer feel protected.
You can disagree with me politically all you want, but you can't tell me my experience didn't happen. Unfortunately, I'll never feel as safe as I did before that day.
