A lab modeling fire extinguishers: students use the combined gas law to calculate the volume of carbon dioxide which they then use to calculate it's density which they then compare to the density of other gases. #labdaysarethebestdays#iteachchemistry
Sometimes labs are not #inquirybased - they're just focused on practicing basic lab skills. Today we practiced making sucrose and salt solutions of varying molarities. A skill scientists need, and that should be practiced BEFORE it's critical to the next step in an experiment!
The Hollow Penny Lab day 1: students notched pennies and submerged them in hydrochloric acid. Tomorrow we'll see what happened after 24 hours in the acid! #iteachchemistry
Today we modeled how the waxy cuticle of a succulent protects against water loss in #environmentalscienceclass - we need to enjoy the last few warm sunny days of the year! #labdaysarethebestdays
Happy Mole Day! Today students examined a Mole Zoo and figured out how all these different substances were each one mole. Then, they measured how many moles of chalk it took to write their names! #nationalmoleday#iteachchemistry
It's pretty exciting when I get to use my chemistry skills to help out other faculty! Today I prepped a nitric acid solution for our #weldingclass - see how it changed the color of the steel so you can see the weld? #collaboration
Students used cereal to represent energy in each trophic level, and then diagramed a food web for Floyd County. After counting out 1000 pieces of cereal (producers) they'll never forget that it takes a ton of producers to support ONE tertiary consumer! #iteachenvironmentalscience
