A thought I've had over the last many months which I never articulated, but I think is worth writing down...

The cop-calling fiasco with the CMF ~1.5 yrs ago I think has had a negative impact on the Math Ed research community (which I'm not a part of) in a couple ways which I'm not sure even all the members of that community realize. And actually, it wasn't even specifically the fiasco itself, but the community's response to it.

1) It has made junior members of the community of color feel unsafe. This is not hypothetical --- "it could make some feel unsafe" --- no, some do feel unsafe and don't speak out for fear of backlash, and I have been directly told as such. If a leader in the community behaves that way and receives no criticism, and in fact receives praises (supporting blog posts from community leaders, continued plenary invitations, hashtag social media support campaigns, etc.), it sends a very negative message to PhD students and junior faculty of color in your community. This is an inward issue, i.e. perceptions of the community from some its own members.

2) There's also an outward issue that is more obvious: the community's credibility on the claim that it truly cares about DEI has come into question from the perspective of those outside the community looking in; actions speak louder than words, and to use a cliche, the community's silence on the matter spoke volumes. I believe this 2nd issue especially contributed to the acceleration of backlash related to the CMF and more broadly against some Math Ed initiatives.

You may or may not agree with some of my thoughts on other matters (are these high school data science courses good or bad? should younger kids have access to acceleration? etc.), but I do believe that 1) and 2) above are simply true, and that the Math Ed research community now has some tough issues ahead of it that it needs to wrestle with. The echo chamber approach of certain members of the community praising each other while pretending the outside world is all crazy isn't working, and #1) and #2) above won't go away by themselves.
