GAUTENG POLICE SEIZE COUNTERFEIT GOODS WORTH R696,000

SAPS seized 9,602 counterfeit and illicit items worth R696,135 during operations at 24 shops across Meyerton, Temba, Crown Mines and Fochville between 19 and 23 October 2026.

The seizures included counterfeit food and other products, illegal medicines, poison, textiles, games and approximately 250kg of counterfeit taxi/Ntsu snuff, along with processing and packaging equipment.

The operations involved the SAPS Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, local police and brand protection representatives as part of efforts to combat illicit trade and protect consumers and legitimate businesses.

Iran has just announced they are expanding their targets beyond US bases for Phase 2 of the war.

R1 MILLION FINE FOR ILLICIT CIGARETTE DEALER: HAWKS INVESTIGATION LEADS TO CONVICTION

A 43-year-old man, Yusuf Muhammed Asmal, has been sentenced to a fine of R1 million, with part of the fine suspended, after being convicted of offences involving illicit cigarettes worth more than R1-million.

The case was investigated by the Hawks Polokwane Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team.

“Through hard work, careful investigation and perseverance, the team ensured that the case proceeded through the courts and resulted in a conviction.

“The investigation followed the discovery of a large consignment of illicit cigarettes during a highway patrol operation on the N11 road in Mahwelereng.

“On 16 September 2021, South African Police Service (SAPS) highway patrol officers stopped a vehicle driven by Asmal and searched it. They found 73 master cases, 49 cartons and five Remington packs of illicit cigarettes, with an estimated total value of more than R1 million.

“The cigarettes were seized and Asmal was arrested and detained at Mahwelereng.

“Following the investigation, the case was transferred to the Polokwane Regional Specialised Commercial Crime Court.

“On 13 October 2026, Asmal was convicted. On 21 October 2026, the court sentenced him to a fine of R1 million or five years’ imprisonment.

“Of the R1 million fine, R300 000, or two years’ imprisonment, was suspended for five years. This means that he must not be convicted of possessing illicit cigarettes during this period.

“The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.”

Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General (Adv.) Gobz Govender stated that, “Illegal trade comes at a cost to our country. This sentence shows that those who break the law will be held accountable. The Hawks will continue to investigate these crimes and protect our economy.”
