In 2023, school districts reported tax abatement losses of $541 million, compared to $326 million in losses in 2017. The average net loss per school district grew from $5.3 million in 2017 to $8.9 million in 2023.
Average Net Revenue Loss Per School District, 2017 – 2023
On average, this lost revenue could have paid for 6,641 more instructors each year, or a mix of hiring and teacher raises to reduce quit rates. In a state plagued by teacher shortages, this missing money could have made a big difference.

#MOREGO@SpiritAirlines boarded us for the 7:30 departure. Then they made us deplane because they didn't have a copilot. Then we reboarded an hour later, only to be told that "legality issues" kept the new copilot from operating. Finally: canceled.
@AlGruskin Today's women's matches are important for how many lower-ranked players (Cristea, Bibi, Vondrousova, Gracheva, even Muchova to a degree) signaled that '23 will see them rise fast (maybe not Cristea) and/or their opponents decline (esp perhaps Caro+Ons).
The @atptour@WTA app really needs some work. At 6pm EDT on Mar 13 it's not even given me the option of seeing completed scores for today, even though Tommy Paul and FAA have definitely already won.
@rolandgarros@TennisChannel just stopped dead in the middle of play at 2pm EDT and switched to @peacockTV? WTF, you couldn't write the contract to allow the match to finish? There's no clock in tennis!
@FedEx And 2: in case FedEx was unaware, many if not most married couples now have different last names. Requiring them to have the same names is ridiculously old-fashioned and, in many cases, sexist.
I just went to @FedEx to try and pick up a package my wife had sent there. I was told I could only pick it up if we had the same last name. This is dumb for 2 reasons. 1: Every other retailer (Target, Home Depot, etc) allows you to name an alternate pickup person. (1/2)
@GlobeVaznis@BostonGlobe Not sure what it means that "all bus routes had drivers assigned to them on Friday," or why you're relying on "some parents on social media" to question the stats. My 2 kids had no after-school buses Thu or Fri.
Why doesn't @BostonSchools switch to automatic enrollment in testing w/opt-out -- like DC -- rather than opt-in, which has yielded only 20% enrollment?

✅ Increased wages
✅ More pathways to full-time positions.
Just heard a presenter from the @urbaninstitute refer to Breonna Taylor and George Floyd's "deaths." Not "murders" or "killings," and no mention of police at all. That seems like a choice. #LiveAtUrban
"It’s increasingly clear the system is fundamentally broken. . . . Where is the bailout for the professional academics who make the college run, despite gig economy-like job stability, no healthcare, and poverty level salaries?”

#ValenciaCollege adjunct faculty demand administrators allow them to have a free and fair union election to win a voice in teaching conditions so as to address inadequate pay and sick leave.
