Nice to see that @Speedway is not giving up on life. I have been a loyalist for a while but they are being surpassed by all the other brands! This is Fort Wayne and they’ve been open two days. Hope they renovate up in Michigan soon!
Thought this essay was excellent. Many well written parts, but one that captured an idea I have thought, but not able to put into words: “Marriage has a way of exposing the parts of us that solitude allows us to hide, and fatherhood intensifies the exposure.”
my mother called me today and asked me if i realized this essay was about me. Maybe not at first, but through the editing and rereads after publishing, i started to.
that makes sense though. Much of what i write about are reflections of my own life and the life around me.
@loganzuber17 I would encourage you to lean into potential relationships and see if you can create the spark you are seeking. As another person said, you are the church, and with mid-life adults it can be hard to create new friendships, so see what you can build and see what the response is.
@loganzuber17 Logan, I love your question and your inquiry. The replies you have here are solid and I also endorse the focus on truth first. The other perspective I would add is from my position as someone who has been at the same church for 23years, which I joined just before I got married.
@bobbyfijan Thank you for sharing Bobby. I have appreciated your professional insight and faith based worldview before, and this is a great example. I have two friends my age who have terminal cancer and their kids are still school aged. This was a well timed share and a good encouragement.
@seandsweeney With this post I’m reminded and encouraged about investing in the kids. I feel like there are so many sacrifices along the way and the fruits of them are seldom celebrated. My daughter needed a long talk about a boy this evening and I didn’t get a refi application done. #WorthIt
I wish the VP candidates were the presidential candidates. This is a much more substantive and civil discussion. I don’t agree with it all, but these guys look like professionals, not the clown show at the top of the tickets.
I was really proud to hear this news and wanted to share. Two of the projects that I worked on last year won an AHF Readers Choice award: Brooke Street Lofts (WI), and Restoring Waters (MN). They were great projects, but I’m most thrilled with the help for residents!
@fortworthchris Have listened to many pods, read many posts and had been encouraged and educated by so much of your work. Was really curious how you would handle that challenge. I’m really grateful you kept after it and are back.
People grow up when they get married.
It is probably better to get married when you are young because then you grow up. And then what else matures people? I have met very few people who have fully matured who do not have children. I think there is a reason for that, a real technical reason. You are not mature until someone else matters more than you—period. Maybe that will be your wife or your husband, but probably not. They might matter as much as you, and maybe that is the right amount. But when you have children, they matter more than you, unless there is something seriously wrong with you.
Very few parents, if push came to shove, would not die for their children. As soon as someone else matters more than you do in some fundamental sense, you have taken another step toward a true, mature responsibility. I do not see that you can do that without necessity, and there is nothing that screams necessity more than an infant.
@seandsweeney Glad you extra verified. Just today I had to watch our company’s monthly IT training videos and they talked about this EXACT scenario. Only in the dramatized story, the guy didn’t call to verify.
Maybe if real estate doesn’t work out, you could sell IT training videos.
@mattbettis I have found a similar feeling when I get a christmas card from my car repair place. Maybe not so much an age indicator as a “I’m a better customer than I want to be” indicator 😂
