Heraklion's archaeological museum contains many treasures, including this lugubrious looking eagle from a 5th century BC shrine to Zeus. Not the typical eagle normally associated with the god.
@NickWhithorn The arrest, like Riina's before him, seems like a piece of theatre to me. These bosses had high level protection for years and were only let go when no longer useful. See comments by Teresa Principato, ex-pm in Palermo.
What a sad pathetic procession of retired judges and "retired" mafiosi eagerly insisting that Messina Denaro's arrest was all a sham, agreed beforehand. And what sad pathetic media happy to let them spout off without asking for any evidence.
Congratulations to Tobias Jones on the publication of his book on the Po. It is an excellent read, a mix of history and travel writing, highlighting a fascinating and relatively unknown part of Italy.
@AmateurPi Yes, many comparisons. Russian arrogance in their power, bad intelligence, underestimating the opposition, failing to consider who would support the opposition.
Much enjoyed Stanley Tucci's programme on Naples, in his new series "Searching for Italy," where he looks at the food in different regions of Italy. It is on BB2 on Sunday nights and the last episode is on Sicily.

I was pleased to see my book being read in Cefalu at the weekend, one of the places featured in the text.
