When the leader of the country implies that calling domestic violence a crime is an exaggeration, he is signaling (and it's not the first time) to abusers that their behavior is acceptable. #Domesticviolence
When we downplay abuse, we empower abusers by playing into their gaslighting (“you’re overreacting”) and other control tactics which reinforces their power. #Domesticviolence
Domestic violence is not about minor disagreements or arguments, and implying so ignores a larger pattern of abuse that puts survivors’ life at risk. #Domesticviolence
When Trump says, “If a man is having a little fight with his wife, they call it a crime.” he is not only minimizing domestic violence, he is also trivializing the lived experiences of survivors. #Domesticviolence
@NicoleCollier95 reminds us that fighting for democracy is more than voting, it is standing up to power structures that seek relatirory measures for engaging in freedom and constitutionally protected rights. #txlege
Texas Dems who broke quorom were forced to sign permission to be release into DPS custody after the 2nd special session adjourned. This is a retalitory move to punsish those who exercised their constitutional right. Reperesentative Collier's resistance is justified. #txlege
If we’re constantly sidestepping the issue to avoid making men uncomfortable, we’re doing the exact thing patriarchy conditions us to do—protecting male power at the expense of justice. #masculinity
Patriarchy shields men from accountability, and this aversion to acknowledging what toxic masculinity is (aspects of masculine socialization that are harfmul to others and men themselves) is, IMO, another way to tip-toe around the problem. #masculinity
Calling attention to toxic masculinity isn't synonmous with saying masculinity is toxic, and I think it is important that we recognize and honor this. 'Cause if not, IMO, it is similar to a "not all men" argument which seeks to divert the attention elsewhere. #masculinity
HB 229: 620 people testified. 11 for the bill, 609 against, and the bill passed. Texas republicans constantly talk about doing things "for Texans" even though they repeatedly deny hearing or illustrate an unwillingness to listen to the voice of Texans. #txlege
Patrick just threatened to have people removed from the gallery for not standing during the invocation. So people are now required to participate in religion at the #txlege ?
It's political theatre from Governor Abott to blame democrats breaking quorom for the inability to send flood relief. He doesn't need legislative approval, just like he didn't need it in '21 when he released $250 million for the border wall. #txlege
If I said, someone was engaging in "toxic behavior" (dishonesty, passive-aggressiveness, etc.) you would understand that I am not insinuating or implying that all behavior is toxic. In the same way, calling attention to toxic masculinity is not saying masculinity is toxic.
Men commit the vast majority of mass shootings, and many of those men have a record of abusing women or using coercive control at home. The warning signs are there long before the headlines. #domesticviolence#endgunviolence
