1/3 Yesterday, I provided an update on the evolving wildfire situation alongside Minister @yukonrpmostyn, Wildland Fire Management, Emergency Support Services, Mayor of Mayo Trevor Ellis, and Yukon First Nations Chief Dawna Hope, Chief Pauline Frost and Chief Sean Smith.
I was pleased to join our Premier and Mayor Ellis earlier this week for these discussions on site. Thank you to everyone working so hard to protect Yukoners, residences and other sites.
1/3 Earlier this week, I went to Mayo and met with Mayor Trevor Ellis and David Trudeau, Regional Protection Manager for Wildland Fire Management. We discussed the current situation on the ground as well as ongoing efforts to manage and fight nearby wildfires.
2/3 Thank you both for walking me through the area and showing me the fire preparedness work, including strategies such as irrigation and structural protection measures. It was important to see things in-person.
3/3 It is important to note that the Village of Mayo remains under an evacuation order. It is not safe to return there. If you are still in Mayo, you are strongly encouraged to leave in case the situation worsens. If you need help in Whitehorse, call ESS at 867-332-4597.
I was pleased to join Premier @RanjPillai1, Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation, and Carmacks Mayor Lee Bodie to mark the opening of a new accessible duplex in Carmacks yesterday.
It’s not only in a great location within the village, but these 2-bedroom homes are also wheelchair accessible and include 2 parking stalls per unit and a washer and dryer. I am proud our government is committed to bringing more housing online that is relevant to community needs.
Emergency Support Service (ESS) is ready to accept Yukoners who have evacuated from Mayo at the Canada Games Centre (CGC). Please phone 867.332.4597 to speak with an ESS team member about available supports.
In just a couple days, Team Yukon will be competing in Halifax for the 2023 North American Indigenous Games and tonight @JeremyHarperMLA and I were honoured to help give them a spirited send-off.
These athletes are the territory’s future leaders and our government is proud to support them as they strive to achieve their goals and reach for their dreams and beyond. Best of luck to everyone competing and have fun!
@NAIG2023
I myself attended the North American Indigenous Games as an athlete and as a coach, and I know how significant these competitions are for driving ambition and building dreams for our youth. Thanks to @YukonASC and the @yukongov for supporting our athletes. Good luck everyone!
What a blast @yukonrpmostyn and I had this evening with #TeamYukon for their pep rally ahead of the @NAIG2023, taking place July 15-23 in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Dartmouth, Millbrook First Nation and Sipekne'katik in Nova Scotia.
Last week I was honoured to join Premier @RanjPillai1 to welcome ambassadors and high commissioners to Canada to the Yukon as part of the Global Affairs northern diplomatic tour. It was great to connect and share stories as well hear about potential for future collaborations.
Another year has wrapped at Eliza Van Bibber School in Pelly Crossing. Congratulations to all and thank you to Principal Josh Korten and school staff for everything you do!
I was honoured to be at Taylor House this afternoon in Whitehorse for the official swearing in ceremony of new Commissioner Adeline Webber for a term of five years. Congratulations Commissioner Webber and I look forward to our future collaborations!
