Almost 32 years ago I became a professional paid firefighter. My recruit class had 24 mostly young men in their mid 20s in it. I knew I was joining a “Brotherhood” because my brother in law was on the same job for years before I got hired. Being able to work with him for most of my career was awesome.
In our class of 24 we were unfamiliar with each other at the time but over the years would become brothers. One of our guys abruptly resigned after four weeks of recruit class. He had found out that he had been hired by New York City Fire Dept. FDNY is the gold standard of our profession. They set the standards and processes for the rest of the country, if not the world, in fire service. He bid us farewell and said he’d keep in touch, which he did. He came to our graduation party to celebrate with us. If we had a gathering of our class he would come and stayed a part of our group for years to come. We would share stories about fires and other incidents (his were always the best).
Fast forward to Sept 11, 2001. I had just gotten off my night shift and had to go back in at 4:30 pm that day. So I went home and was getting ready to go to my other job when my phone started blowing up with calls. Finally I answered one and it was a friend not on the job telling me there was a big fire in the twin towers and to put the news on. So I sat and turned on the news and it was on every channel. Within 2 minutes of watching… I saw the second plane hit the second tower. Like everyone else in the country I was shocked and wondering what was going on. The fires in the buildings were massive. He was asking me what the fire dept would be doing in such a situation, I explained that they would be going in and climbing the the stairs to get up there to fight those fires and help with the evacuation of the buildings. We could see on TV that people were jumping from the top floors… I can’t even imagine being faced with that choice. We watched in horror as the first building collapsed. The first thing I said to my buddy was “I can’t believe how many firefighters just died”
Shortly after the feed from right down there started coming in, with sound. For those unfamiliar, firefighters have an alarm attached to their air packs called a PASS device. These alarms sound when a firefighter doesn’t move for a period of time. It’s short too. We would hear them in our fire buildings a lot while overhaul was going on… the nozzle man waiting for the truck crew to shred the walls and ceiling to wash down hot spots… the truck crew resting while the nozzle man hosed down the area… they would start to sound. The firefighter would quickly wiggle or shake his pack to get it to stop.
When the video feed started coming in with sound of the collapsed towers I could hear the chirps of these PASS devices. Sounded like hundreds of them all sounding. No wiggles or shakes shut them off. They sounded until the batteries died. I was doubly shocked. My thought immediately went to my recruit class brother that left us to go to FDNY. I was selfishly hoping he was off that day. I started to call guys from my class to see if they knew if he was working. No one knew anything. Couldn’t get calls into the city. Emotions were in turmoil.
My department services a city of about 100 thousand people. We had about 330 members (at that time… we have been cut to teeth since then and now only have about 225). I knew how many apparatus and firefighters we sent to calls but had no idea how many NY would send to such and incident… We would later learn that 343 firefighters perished in those piles of steel and concrete. It blew my mind that they lost more than my WHOLE department in seconds. That’s some tough perspective.
In the days after we found out in fact that our recruit class brother was on duty that day. He was one of the 343.
I will NEVER forget. Rest in peace brother… Brian Sweeney. This was the last pic of him we found taken from stock video.
Faced with one of the most egregious scandals in DC history, House leadership, the White House, and Gonzales himself all agreed we would leave the decision up to the voters of Texas.
Last night, Texas made their voice heard.
For the first time in his career, Tony lost.
We won.

The last Browns QB to win his first NFL start was Eric Zeier, who beat the Cincinnati Bengals in overtime in 1995. Cleveland’s head coach that year was Bill Belichick, and that was the year before the Browns moved to Baltimore.
@nikgeneburn I’ve been up for three hours waiting for drop. The time rolls around and it logs me out of the launcher and I can’t log in because your servers. What the fuck.
@JKBOGEN@StatsOnFire I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure you 100% can hurdle o-line man on defense on FGs, just can’t push off them in order to do it, and it can’t be over the center I believe. Again could be wrong just putting it out there because you may be wrong
