Was grateful to spend one of my final days on the job at NCDPI behind the wheel of a school bus after touring the amazing @ThomasBuiltBus plant! From the day bus 87 pulled up to take me to elementary school in 1st grade to now, the school bus has symbolized opportunity for me!
EdNC’s Mebane Rash has been to schools in 13 counties over the course of two years with @JeremyRGibbs. Here’s what she learned about leadership in schools before, during, and after the pandemic.

As I wrap up my time serving at NCDPI in January, I have been looking back at photos I took over the years. Such wonderful memories! This is Franklin High grads walking the halls at Cartoogechaye Elementary in Macon County April 2019 (think this was my first school visit w/ DPI).
The most welcoming wave in North Carolina this morning. Yancey County Schools are back after over 7 weeks out due to the impacts of Helene, they are the last traditional public school district to return. Doug Thomas, a bus driver & custodian, says this is best job I’ve ever had.
An unparalleled public servant. In the proclamation for her induction into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine one line from the state toast stood out: where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great. Lynn’s leadership has enabled that growth for generations of NC’s children!
There were cheers & some tears at today's @edstateboard_nc meeting as we honored Dr. Lynn Harvey, retiring after 35+ years of dedicated service. @CTruittNCDPI presented Dr. Harvey with the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Thank you, Dr. Harvey for your incredible legacy!
Navigate NC: the knowledge, wisdom, and insight is in the room. The unique @ncpublicschools leadership connections and the growth of the C&I collective is underway! The Office of Regional Support is so grateful for these leaders and that they’re sharing their valuable time.
So great to see the collective efficacy of @ncpublicschools staff from all corners of the agency and all corners of the state come together to invest in Regional Support. Learning, growing, and leading together to serve schools and districts!
At Micaville Elementary, there’s a message on the wall of the principal’s office: “Every child is a story yet to be told…” Helene will now be part of their stories. #nced https://t.co/QH5CgFSBuN
Great to be with @SwainNCSchools to celebrate the beginning of their journey to build a brand new middle school. A beautiful site looking up at the Great Smoky Mountains that will serve generations of Swain Middle Maroon Devils for many years to come!
North Carolina’s general election is just around the corner. Here’s what you need to know about the six races most important to education. https://t.co/m2oH6Ne9kh
A beautiful day in Macon County celebrating the groundbreaking for the new Franklin High School. Congratulations to Macon County Schools for bringing the community together and for taking this giant leap forward!
More than 50,000 students in western North Carolina have been out of school for more than two weeks, as their communities recover from Helene.
Students from Old Fort Elementary are returning to class Monday — but not to their school.

🧵I visited Rutherford, Polk, Haywood, McDowell, Buncombe & Madison counties this week. Public schools are acting distributions centers & communication hubs - the places where everyone goes to get whatever they need. What is an anchor institution? That is. https://t.co/zNYT5Cwx12
Before the storm, during, and long after...To quote @EdNC_Rural "Our public school systems fall in the special category of anchor institutions...rooted by definition, moored to the communities they serve...they offer stability and support when the environment inevitably changes."
“During this season, HCC worked as a lead partner to provide hope, convene partners, deploy critical training, and build a foundation for our future workforce,” writes Haywood Community College president Dr. Shelley White. https://t.co/9Le1DohV3y
A great day visiting schools in Ashe County with @JanKingNC seeing the impact of @NCPrincipals leadership programming there. So many good things to see. I was even able to get in on the action during their archery lesson in PE!
As we wrap up #NCHSPF today, we're also excited to welcome the 5th cohort of #ElevateNC to Greensboro today for meeting 1! We're so excited to kick things off with this new cohort of leaders who are passionate about #highered!
