Yesterday at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, “A Future Without Type 1 Diabetes: Accelerating Breakthroughs and Creating Hope,” 16-year-old Ruby Whitmore of Old Town, Maine, was one of @BreakthroughT1D's Children’s Congress Delegates who shared her story of living with type 1 diabetes (#T1D).

We’re incredibly grateful to @SenatorCollins, @SenatorShaheen, and Senator @PattyMurray for holding this important hearing and championing the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) — a program that has fueled nearly every major T1D research breakthrough. During the hearing, Senator Collins announced that she and Senator Shaheen had just introduced the Special Diabetes Program Reauthorization Act of 2025 to renew this funding for 2 years.

Ruby’s powerful message reminds us why this work matters. Thanks to innovations made possible by the SDP, she’s able to lead, compete, and dream big. With continued support, we can ensure everyone with T1D has that same chance.

ADA is here and the Breakthrough T1D team is on site! Day one came with some very exciting news from Vertex on the trials surrounding their drug Zimislecel, also known as VX880. Our Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Sanjoy Dutta, breaks down the latest updates on where the trial stands one year later and what happens next.

A few highlights from their announcement:

☑️ 10/12 participants no longer need external insulin therapy and all 12 participants are making their own insulin a year after receiving the cells
☑️ All 12 participants met the primary endpoint, including elimination of severe hypoglycemic events
☑️ All 12 participants showed improvements in blood glucose control as demonstrated by CGM metrics
☑️ Phase 3 is underway and will complete enrollment and dosing by mid-2025

Eli Lilly promised to lower Humalog insulin’s per-vial price by 70% effective Q4 2023.

Today is December 29, 2023 and Humalog’s price remains $300/vial, the highest in US history.

@Kidfears99 And, let’s not just think co-pay at the counter is an acceptable substitute for lowering the cost. It’s a distraction to the core issue of making insulin affordable. High cost, irregardless of what I pay at the counter, is unethical & unnecessary to all parties involved.

@PBlueNovember The only treatment for diabetes prior to Insulin was starvation. Doctors prescribed starvation, in hopes that your child might live a few months longer.
