@markcboon@_oceanyang@PhoebeLam9@geotraces@NSF@USGS And although I usually love silly things, our chosen color bar is far from silly. It’s the color bar officially recommended for oceanic oxygen concentrations in Oceanography magazine’s piece called ‘Guidelines for effective and accurate colormap selection.’
Proud of our new paper quantifying metal release when #DeepSeaMining effluent is discharged into anoxic waters. Potentially toxic copper is solubilized, among others, showing importance of avoiding anoxic waters for mining discharge.

@markcboon@_oceanyang@PhoebeLam9@geotraces@NSF@USGS Hi Mark, not every international deep-sea mining company has agreed to release their effluent into deep waters, so it’s not “fully known.” The point of the paper is to show the impact if one did discharge into anoxic waters, and perhaps suggest against it.
We're hiring two tenure-track Assistant Professors @tamu_ocean in the areas of Geological Oceanography and Remote Sensing Oceanography! Please check out the ads at https://t.co/TI84la35YG and https://t.co/zjnD7sYyeW for more information or to apply!
And the #FitzLab is off to Main Endeavor Field on the Juan de Fuca Ridge aboard @RVAtlantis. This group has already done so much in two short days… I’m so proud!! Excited for some amazing hydrothermal oceanography! @tamu_ocean@TAMUArtSci#NSFfunded
🧵Since it is becoming hard to track, here is a thread of the simply astounding weather records planet Earth has started shattering in recent weeks:
1. Dramatic flood events have begun striking various countries around the world simultaneously this week.

Congrats to recently minted #FitzLab student Dr. Nate Lanning on his exciting publication in PNAS on how anthropogenic lead penetrates the oldest waters in the global ocean in the abyssal North Pacific. @tamu_ocean@TAMUArtSci#NSFfunded
We got our very own trace metal rosette today! Science dreams come true! We can’t wait to head out to collect trace metal clean seawater in the Gulf of Mexico and Juan de Fuca Ridge over the next three months! #FitzLab@tamu_ocean@TAMUArtSci
It felt great to get the SE shipping container from @geotraces_gp17 back home from the Southern Ocean, but it took real muscles to reorganize and ship out everyone’s precious samples! A HUGE thanks to the #FitzLab, #MarcantonioLab, @ChrissyWieder!
4-4-4klift funday! So many pallet boxes moved today. Couldn’t have done it without all this muscle power. #forkliftfunday@JessFitzsimmons

I just read a rec letter that one of my former students wrote to help nominate one of my current students for a teaching award. It brought tears to my eyes. A much-needed Friday pick-me-up, and a reminder of what a privilege it is to mentor young scientists!
The #FitzLab is finally together (minus two beloved undergrads) for the first time since September 2022, and so we celebrated with lunch and this picture! I’m so excited for the amazing oceanography that this lab family is producing! @tamu_ocean@TAMUArtSci
Second to last trace metal CTD cast of @geotraces_gp17! I’m so lucky to have had this amazing group of students and postdocs working with me on trace metal ops. I couldn’t have asked for a better team! #FitzLab@tamu_ocean @marmite_usf @BigelowLab@ODU
So excited that our iron isotopes in seawater review has finally come out! @marmite_usf and I had a fun time writing this one together! Thanks for the shoutout, @geotraces!
