Ember barley (left) alongside Goldie oats (right) south of Wagga Wagga NSW. Sown on 11 April, and photo taken 6 weeks later, shows excellent establishment of these varieties, as well as the prostrate growth habit of Ember compared with the high early vigour of the Goldie dual purpose oat which will mature with a tall plant height with good panicle emergence.

Exciting to have two March barley germinations at Minnipa and Wunkar as part of @SAGrainTrust@SADiscoveryFarm project looking at varietal biomass for early grazing, and opportunistic grain and graze. Winter types looking great, while springs rapidly approach stem elongation.
🌱 First 2026 trial is in the ground!
We’re testing sowing time × seeding depth in faba beans to see if deeper seeding can allow earlier sowing without sacrificing performance. Early differences are already emerging.

Faba beans on 165mm rows disc sown early April. Crop emerging on stored soil moisture whilst still warm.
Acidic subsoil with lime applied but yet to have amelioration (tillage to 250mm depth).
Sown early to reduce acid throttle effects + acid tolerant rhizobia @ 2 x rate.
