PRECHECK OPERATIONAL, BUT FUNDING UNCERTAINTY PERSISTS

The U.S. travel industry welcomes clarification that the Department of Homeland Security has decided to keep TSA PreCheck lanes operational at U.S. airports for now, even as TSA officers continue to work without pay amid the partial government shutdown.

“We are glad that DHS has decided to keep PreCheck operational and avoid a crisis of its own making,” said U.S. Travel CEO Geoff Freeman. “We are urging the same for Global Entry. These Trusted Traveler Programs strengthen aviation security and improve screening efficiency. They are funded by user fees, and there is no reason at this time for them to be suspended.”

“Travelers can continue to use PreCheck lanes without immediate interruption, which is critical during a peak travel period,” he added. “At the same time, this situation highlights the uncertainty and strain placed on both travelers and the dedicated men and women working on the frontlines of airport security. Congress must act with urgency to fully fund TSA. Air travel is essential for our economy and daily life, and it’s disgraceful for travel to be used as leverage in political disagreements.”

Travelers Should be Prioritized, Not Leveraged

The suspension of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry is extremely disappointing. We are disgusted that over the last 90 days, Democrats and Republicans have used air traffic controllers, TSA, CBP and the entire travel experience as a means to achieve political ends.

Travelers should be prioritized, not leveraged. Travel is the gateway to the American economy and Americans should not have their mobility, security or travel experience diminished because elected leaders fail to resolve their differences.

Travel is vital to the American people and it is time for policymakers to put the American people first.
