The Islamic Republic of Iran attacked Israel on April 13th with one of the largest missile barrages in history. The fact that Israel, together with a regional and international coalition, successfully intercepted the vast majority of the incoming drones and missiles, should not lead to complacency.

First, the air defense operation was executed under ideal conditions, with more than a week’s warning and precise intelligence.

Second, the cost of this defense operation, estimated at over $1 billion, raises serious concerns about the sustainability of a purely defensive strategy against future attacks.

Most importantly, if Iran succeeds in developing nuclear warheads, a 99% interception rate may not be enough to prevent disaster.

As policymakers contemplate broader strategies to defend against Iranian aggression, they must factor in these considerations to prevent a far deadlier attack in the future.
