TLDR Every interop protocol is trying to connect chains and build tools/features to make various multichain actions occur. They want to connect as fast as possible, get as many apps/asset issuers to use them, and do it all while maintaining some respectable trust assumptions. How they handle security or feature set is typically the main differentiator.

Everything else is marketing.

Hyperlane and Layerzero largely outsource security (barring 5 or less party multi sigs to my knowledge).

For outsourced security (DVNs and ISMs) in particular it is important to value quality over quantity. It’s very hard to make a sufficiently decentralized cross-chain verification system like the wormhole guardians (13/19 POA consensus and no 3rd party RPCs). Most outsourced security models are 5 or less party multi sigs under the hood

Hyperlane wraps wormhole’s guardian security. Interesting that LZ doesn’t. Not sure if this is biased or what given we are competitors.

At the end of the day. Most interop protocols (ccip, Hyperlane, axelar, wormhole, Lz) have a way to send messages between chains and have built a bunch of tools on top.

Vary by protocol but..

- Token standards (NTT used by $USDS or OFT used by $USR)

- Pull messaging (wormhole queries used by World ID or Lzread used by anime/azuki)

- You can also integrate messaging directly like $BUIDL does with wormhole messaging

Etc.

The two in question (Lz and Hyperlane) are grouped together because they predominately outsource security but they are just in the broader interop category IMO

Not saying that is a bad thing either, industry likely entirely moves to some version of this modular model but owning the best multichain verification system and being able to vertically integrate it into all your tooling will be important and provide the best experience for asset issuers and devs.
