PS. Thank you @AmandaVincent1 & @RoshniMangar for creating such an incredible course that is flexible enough to ensure we, the students, can all learn something new and applicable to any of our interests! See you all in our final class today 🥰
I just complete my final reflection for #OceanConsvnUBC🥲Bittersweet moment to think about all I have learned and so I wanted to share my main take away: Before starting any project, think about all the stakeholders impacted & how you can involve them.
Looking forward to my #OceanConsvnUBC field-trip to Steveston. The Fraser has such a rich & complex fishing history for Indigenous Peoples, Asian-Canadian communities and European settlers. I’m eager to learn more and will be sure to share more facts too!
#FunFishFact: It is thought that salmon recognize the smell of their home streams and that is how they are able to return back to their original spawning zones. Pretty neat! #OceanConsvnUBC
To quote Dr. Cisneros-Montemayor's #OceanConsvnUBC pre-lecture, “We are spending more and more effort to catch the same amount of fish”… Does this not majorly panic people that there is a global overfishing issue?!?
Ever heard of Baader-Meinhof phenomenon? Where once you learn something new you start to see it everywhere over and over again. Well we did a Marine Protected Areas (PA) exercise in #OceanConsvnUBC and now I have 2 other projects for 2 different classes on PAs...😳
It’s difficult to solve issues when there is an abundance of missing data. Dr. Kleiber’s seminar on the role of feminism in fisheries highlights the lack of data we have about women in the fishing industry, which results in a sexist perspective. #OceanConsvnUBC
Had an emotional #OceanConsvnUBC class yesterday watching the Guardian's video on slave labour supplying prawns to Walmart, Tesco, and other large-scale supermarkets. Please take the time to watch this life changing video.

Justice is more than just the fair distribution of benefits and burdens. It also requires inclusive decision-making and recognition of a multitude of stakeholders and values. True holistic approaches to marine conservation therefore need to consider justice too!#OceanConsvnUBC
The first Canadian Marine Protected Area (MPA) was established exactly 19 years ago just offshore of British Columbia. It's the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents MPA and its objective is to conserve ecosystem function of hydrothermal vents.#OceanConsvnUBC
“Ghost gear” (abandoned fishing equipment) is a serious issue in continuing to kill sea life and decrease global fish stocks. But, what I learned yesterday on my #OceanConsvnUBC field trip is that there are projects focused on retrieving and properly disposing of it!
Went on an amazing field trip right around the corner of my place at... False Creek! Did you know Habitat Island was a man made island constructed with the purpose of restoring ecological services to the river? #OceanConsvnUBC
The UN declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. Let's get out there to support and celebrate our local small-scale fisheries! @FAO#IYAFA2022#OceanConsvnUBC
#SadFacts Majority of shrimp are caught using bottom trawling nets. Therefore, there aren't many sustainable alternatives. The best you and I can do is to stop eating shrimp or chose other seafoods that support sustainable fishing. #OceanConsvnUBC
Just wanted to share some cool new discoveries of Atlantic squid and lanternfish occurring more north than expected. #OceanConsvnUBC

Today's fish is Bargibant's Seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti)! They've evolved to live exclusively on fan corals and closely mimic the shape and color of the coral polyps. They can be red or yellow and may have color change abilities!
