Home from this year’s @BIGchats BIG Event after another fantastic three days of learning so much, talking to amazing people, and grossing everyone out with a pimple popping demo. Super excited to be a part of the committee this year and can’t wait to dig in more!
I am debating nominating myself for the @BIGchats Executive Committee as a General Officer because I’d love to get more involved and learn more about the inner workings but would anybody be happy to second me? Most of my BIG connections are here so this seemed the best way to ask
I was back on stage for this year’s big demo competition at #BigEvent23 yesterday, getting a gang of science communicators to pretend to be nerve cells. Great fun and some amazing feedback from colleagues I hugely respect. A great experience as always, thank you @BIGchats
@UpIsNotJump I enjoyed the Alyx video because I like your humour and it came across in the video, but that could be applied to any video you make and is not specific to that type. My favourite of yours are the cooking/DIY/pickle videos for that reason, so I’d love to see more like those.
The rumours are true. Netflix is thrilled that so many of you have been watching Sandman, and the thing we were all hoping would happen... has indeed happened...
I love the phrase “with all due respect”. It sounds like you’re being polite but the amount of respect that is due might be zero, or negative. I could be telling you that I mean these words disrespectfully because that’s the amount of respect that’s due.
What a great phrase.
Word of the day is Zugzwang [tzoog-tzwung]: a situation in chess (and life) in which a move must be made, but each possible one will make the situation worse.
Had a great day at #presenternet22 It’s always so great to talk to and hear from other presenters: people always have new tips to share that you’ve never heard before and are just generally the nicest bunch!
#LongCovid has been trending today, which is great because it’s so easy for people to forget it’s a thing. Neighbour asked me how I was yesterday and was shocked when I told him I was still struggling. He had assumed I’d be fine by now, but no: 7 months in and still suffering.
I don't care how many people enjoy it, fiction in the present tense is an ABDICATION OF NARRATIVE RESPONSIBILITY. I resent having to re-calibrate my entire attitude to time whenever I open a novel in the present tense. Away with them!
You would think I’d actually be pretty good at speaking Italian by this point, wouldn’t you? And yet…
Not @duolingo ’s fault of course, I am just a very slow learner apparently! 😂
@d_yellowlees That’s called the Doorway Effect! When you step into a new room, your brain tries to take in all of the sudden new scenery and sometimes forgets what else it was doing before it started doing that! 😊
@tuckwoodstock Very overworked day, manager gathers us at 4:55pm and asks how we are. I told them I was so stressed that if they asked me to do anything else that day I would probably cry. I was taken aside the next day and told that that was “not an appropriate thing to say to a manager”.
I had an amazing time at @BIGchats ’s #BIGEvent22 in Belfast. I’ve been inspired, moved, reignited, and I’ve met some wonderful people that I miss already and hope to connect with again soon.
Of course, I forgot to take any pictures of them, so here’s a seagull I met instead.
