Stranded in Thailand: 13 South Africans say they were forced to work in online scam, not paid, told to pay R250 000 for their release.
A group of at least 13 Young South Africans who say they were promised jobs in English customer services in Thailand were then allegedly taken by force to a different country, which is Myanmar.
They were forced to work for 14 hours a day scamming people online, and not paid for the work. And when they requested to go back home, they were allegedly told to pay R250,000 each for their release.
To date, they are still stuck in Thailand after spending Christmas there and possibly now having to spend a new year there. They say because they could not do the job of scamming people very well, they were thrown out into the bushes by the people who had captured them and kept them by force.
Now they are stranded in a place that they do not quite know in Thailand. They don’t have any money for flights, they’re isolated and they say they are getting various illnesses. One young woman says they were recruited under the promise of better opportunities.
Instead, their passports were taken, their phone access restricted, and they were forced into online scam operations. Those who refused say they were punished and sometimes given only one meal a day. One man says he was told he would be an “internet promoter.”
But after being forced to cross a river, he realised the job involved scamming people — something he says he could not do.
A third person says the food they are being given is making them sick. He describes getting skin reactions, stomach problems, and people being ignored when they report illness.
The group says some women were harmed, threatened, insulted daily, and forced to work without pay. They say all they want is to come home but, two weeks after asking the department of international relations (Dirco) about the matter, they have not responded.
What do you think, why is the government not responding to questions about this group? How many more people are being recruited overseas under false job promises right now?

The recent conversation between Ashley and Bonni on Big Brother, which invalidated a survivor's experience, is deeply troubling.
When a woman bravely shares her story of sexual assault, it is vital to offer support, not judgment or mockery. Labelling Karabo ‘Kay B’ Mphirime experience as "attention seeking" and failing to stand with survivors are harmful microaggressions that perpetuate a culture of victim-blaming.
These attitudes foster a culture of silence and shame, discouraging survivors from speaking out about their experiences, and it extends far beyond the so-called "mean girl" behaviour - it highlights a systemic problem of rape culture. We must believe in survivors, amplify their voices, and stand with them in solidarity. #BBMzansi #womenforchange @BBMzansi
