North Carolina's Local Government Commission just voted 5-1 to give their approval for Guilford County's plan to borrow $1.7 billion for school construction via the sale of bonds. Despite the eventual lopsided vote, the meeting was actually pretty suspenseful.
Whitney Oakley just named superintendent of Guilford County Schools by vote of the school board.
"I believe the power of public education can change the world," Oakley said.
Breaking: Alan Branson is filing an appeal to superior court in his protest related to the May Guilford school bond referendum. That could continue to hold up the certification of the bond referendum, but only if a judge grants a stay. That decision expected Monday.
Dr. Whitney Oakley, the district's deputy superintendent, just approved as interim superintendent by school board 8-0. She'll acting as superintendent starting July 11.

GCS school board just dropped the mask mandate and the testing requirement for unvaccinated students, and fully reopened schools for visitors and volunteers and school board meetings for spectators.
This is the meeting where commissioners will consider whether to extend the county mask mandate. Apparently, they will be having that conversation virtually, "Due to Impacts of COVID-19."
