Keep getting sidetracked reading Tales of the TMNT while trying to gather my thoughts for Vol 2, and realised the world needs to appreciate these Tales frontpieces so gonna try and post one every once in a while with credits when possible! First one ever by Kevin Eastman!
Maybe, one day, there'll be a mainstream documentary about this machine, and how it works, and everyone will wring their hands and say "How did we let this happen?"
But the idea that "debate" will fix it, I think, is wrong.
Lack of debate is not the problem.
15/15
I would love to know what the answer to that is?
The machine, I think, is unprecedented.
We're in an era where "Mumsnet" is a radicalisation machine, and is a hub for anti-trans activism. Do most people in the general public know that? I doubt it. 14/
These days, Graham simply does the tour of Right Wing news outlets and Youtube shows, repeating propaganda.
It's not that progressives are bad at debate, it's that they're up against a mainstream and online propaganda machine. 13/
Even his followers in the comments felt that he (and Helen and Arty, his co-hosts) lost that debate, because OF COURSE THEY DID. Their hatred, when challenged, is shown up to be what it is. 12/
The only time he had a serious debate (on his Youtube) with someone who robustly challenged him, he got incredibly angry and ended up threatening to sue the person with someone else's solicitors (because, that is what anti-trans activists do in response to criticism.) 11/
Although he doesn't do it anymore, Graham Linehan once submitted himself to an interview on the BBC with someone who (very gently) challenged him, and it was generally considered to be a disaster for the GC movement at the time. (He said the quiet things out loud.) 10/
But Rowling would never submit herself to an interview where awkward contradictions, extremism etc would be brought up. She gets a free pass from the same centrist commentators who demand that people who criticise her just need to get better at "debating their points." 9/
@meganphelps I doubt that most people know that Rowling misgenders trans people regularly, these days. There is a perception that she is a progressive woman with "reasonable concerns," which is propaganda. You can't "debate" that, you expose that. 8/
@meganphelps Most people know that JK Rowling is a victim of domestic violence, and cites that as a reason for her "feminist activism," but they won't know that Rowling looked the other way when her friend and ally Posie Parker did an interview with a Far Right convicted domestic abuser. 7/
@meganphelps Most people don't know, for example, that in her essay, Rowling recommended another (deceased) anti-trans activist as an "inspiration" whom is infamous for referring to trans women as "pathetic, sick fucks" and "blackface actors." Most people would not agree with that speech. 6/
@meganphelps The issue is that the general public simply don't know about her extremism.
The "gender critical" movement like to boast that most people agree with them, but that's impossible, because most people don't actually know what they think about trans people. 5/
@meganphelps The problem is not that progressives aren't "debating" effectively - there are countless excellent ripostes to Rowling's activism - the problem is that they are up against a mainstream propaganda machine that paints Rowling as a feminist hero, and them as militant activists. 4/
@meganphelps ...where she cannot dismiss the person interviewing her as a troll, cannot get away with her usual snide remarks in reply to criticism of her anti-trans activism, and can't just sue the person interviewing her into silence. 3/
She did do a fawning 7-part podcast called "The Witch Trials of JK Rowling" with @meganphelps (who got out of one cult - The Westboro Baptist Church - only to fall straight into another one - The Gender Critical Movement.) But, she's never had to actually debate in a forum...2/
"The problem is that progressives are afraid of debate." You know, this year it'll be five years since JK Rowling revealed herself to be an anti-trans activist, and in all that time she has not once done a mainstream interview with any journalist who will challenge her. 1/
