In Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning and her comrades encounter the colossal fal'Cie Titan, who subsequently challenges them in various trials. Titan’s function is to protect and stimulate the ecosystem in the world of Gran Pulse, continuously cultivating strength. He does so by consuming weaker species and giving birth to new ones, and ultimately shows respect to Lightning once she has proven her abilities.

In ancient Greek lore, there is no single character called Titan; rather, the Titans (loosely meaning ‘the Straining Ones’) were the primordial gods that preceded the Olympians. The king of the Titans was Kronos (also spelled Cronus), who fathered the first generation of Olympians. Kronos was so afraid that one of his children would overpower him and usurp his throne that he swallowed each of them immediately upon birth. Not only does this reflect how Titan in Final Fantasy XIII "chews up" any creature he deems unworthy, but Kronos is eventually defeated by his son Zeus - the god of lightning - who rescues his devoured siblings.
