Concept Artist here, the "AI hate" directed at Larian Studio is 100% ignorant and bad faith virtue-signaling.
Artists are NOT against AI usage as a tool, we're against Generative AI that was trained on real artworks and mass-produced "slops" that imitated our hard work and then marketed as our replacement.
In pre-production, the art team would grab random pics off the internet and other games to create a general mood board for aesthetics and "vibe" that fit the art direction (There are more nuances than this, I'm describing this in the most simplified way possible)
A mood board of a character may include several pictures of other videogames or anime shows, dozens of object with "texture references" for parts of their attire, multiple reference pictures of relevant objects such as animals or historical weapons or even other character artwork made for other games; ALL of which are randomly drawn from the internet and put together for the purpose of creating an overall aesthetic for a design that will become original in its own way inspired by its references and the artist's own creativity and originality to visualize it when they create the design by doing ART.
Larian Studio mentioned using AI to streamline this process; an actively menial labor of "looking for relavant and cool pics on the internet" in essence.
There is zero reason why AI speeding up this process is a bad thing; it is essentially the same as someone asking Grok for facts they could have spent a few hours reading through Wikipedia pages.
None of the pictures grabbed by either the AI or the art team in this process are being exploited for any monetary gain since they're simply inspiration and visual direction, this has been standard practice in the industry for decades.
Holy fuck guys we’re not "pushing hard" for or replacing concept artists with AI.
We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do.
I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists.
We use AI tools to explore references, just like we use google and art books. At the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we replace with original concept art. There is no comparison.
I talked about how we use ML here if you would like to know more:

We've hired creatives for their talent, not for their ability to do what a machine suggests, but they can experiment with these tools to make their lives easier.
I agree.
I use AI tools. I use it to make complex formulas for Excel and Monday. I use ChatGPT as an assistant and rubberduck (though I don’t trust it with complex administrative work). I use its text to speech daily.
I use prowritingaid to help find repetition in my writing and tell me if I’m using too many short sentences.
I’ve used AI upscalers like gigapixel (though I’m no longer using these and instead am repainting things at a high resolution).
Most devs have used or do use some form of AI or machine learning in games development. We like to automate tedious tasks so we can focus on areas that deserves our attention.
I don’t use AI to create for me. I don’t use it to generate art, or do creative writing for me. I use it to streamline other areas of my life so I have more time to create myself. This sounds like what Kojima is suggesting. I doubt he is sitting there asking it for game ideas. He likely isn’t short on those.
It’s a shame that AI has been co-opted by a bunch of grifters who talk down to creatives as if it will replace us. How adversarial people can be is disgusting and the culture of AI on social media in general reminds me of NFTs.
The reality is that AI can generate video, music, images and text. But it’s derivative. It’s slop.
Because if you don’t learn these crafts yourself you will never develop the knowledge to understand what is worth making.
That’s why we see so much AI copyright breaches because the people making this content can’t think of anything original so here’s Goku twerking and bob ross eating paint.
I’m not against AI tools. I don’t hide the fact I use them because AI can mean many things and honestly what 3D artist would say no to AI UVs.
What we don’t want is AI RNG art and having a bunch of tech guys and grifters telling us slop is good and we are worthless.
I think more artists would adopt it in some form if it wasn’t rubbed into our faces as a replacement.
If anything most AI proves that creatives are valuable, without us you get slop. Not thoughtful, expressive works with intent and integrity. We’ve discussed in my discord how ChatGPT is terrible for creative writing and can actually work against you. I won’t buy books with AI covers as I assume the content is AI. I have seen aspiring authors on here with AI book summaries and they clearly don’t see that it’s terribly written. Dunning Kruger in effect.
You’d have to be pretty amateur to think any of these tools are better than an experienced creative. And in the hands of someone with no skill they are smoke and mirrors.
Obviously I’m against using stolen art so I steer clear of genAI art entirely. I know artists who say they’re “anti-AI” then use it because “I can’t afford to hire someone to help me”. Fine do that but be honest about it. Don’t be a hypocrite.
I have used the tools to understand what they’re capable of. I keep wanting to make a video on this cos it’s actually funny how bad it is. I’ve also spoken about AI at government level and advocated against opt out. I stand by LLMs being theft and that work should be licensed.
Video AI feels like a toy. Looks good but it’s so random. So pointless.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Microwaving a meal does not make you a chef.
It’s also important not to become overly reliant on these tools to the point you can’t sustain yourself without them.
But AI is something we can use to boost efficiency. I do it. It’s why my production standards are so effective. I used it to empower artists.
I would also quite happily see non-productivity admin roles like HR replaced by AI if it meant my company could put more money into hiring and supporting creatives.
