Dear wonderful fellow Kentuckians,
Call your state senators and reps now. Tell them to vote NO on BR 1264 (SB-89) - a bill to remove *all* protections from the vast majorities of our waterways by redefining what is “protected” to only “navigable waters”. It’s being pushed as an “emergency” and could be passed within days. Find your senator at https://t.co/ujeeXrVtoC Legislators or call 502-564-8100 to leave a message.
Once passed, the vast majority of our creeks, streams, cave waters, springs, etc. will have no protections at ALL - not at the state level, not at the federal level. Only lakes and big rivers like the Ohio, the Green, etc. will retain 'protections' (but of course, they won't really because the intrinsic state of water is that it flows... from soon to be unprotected tributaries.)
The circulatory system of Kentucky is in so many ways our water. Kentucky Bourbon is loved worldwide directly because of our clean limestone filtered waters.
Mammoth Cave was built and is sustained by our healthy waters. Our farms and uniquely biodiverse lands rely on the health of our water. If this bill passes, instantly, our world famous waterfalls and natural springs won't be protected anymore.
The bill might make things a tiny bit easier on our coal industry, but at the sake of our core industries and nearly everything that makes us so wild, beautiful and unique.

@TammyRenee2567 5/6 The limestone filtration is crucial because it:
* Removes iron (which would turn whiskey black)
* Adds calcium and magnesium (helps with fermentation)
* Provides consistent pH levels
* Filters out impurities
@GovAndyBeshear@KentuckyEM@kystatepolice@KYTC Thanks, Gov! Speaking of Kentucky Waters - Please do what you can to save our bourbon, tourist and Ag industries from the disaster of a bill that BR1264 is. Bourbon *needs* clean limestone filtered waters. Most of our tourism is water related (even the caves!) Ag too!
@MrAppalachian@heraldleader This isn’t “industry vs. environmental”. Bourbon, a multibillion dollar industry relies on our clean, limestone filtered waters. Our tourism mostly surrounds our water - the waterfalls, the rivers, the springs, the cave systems, and again, the bourbon, all need clean water.
@MrAppalachian@heraldleader The federal level definition of protected waters only includes the *big* rivers and lakes so that the states can regulate the smaller waters. If KY defines protected waters as ‘navigable water’ too, that leaves creeks, ground waters, underground waters, etc. unprotected.
9/9 This isn't about politics. It's about protecting Kentucky's water - our heritage, our economy, our health. Every Kentuckian drinks this water. Every Kentucky business relies on it.
Share this thread. Call your reps. Time is short.
1/9 Who. will. win?!
Big Coal just got KY State Senate to pass an "emergency" bill (BR1264) that would strip ALL protection from every KY waterway except big rivers & lakes. This puts them against KY's bourbon, tourism, agriculture & drinking water industries.🧵
