The Chagos Files - joining the dots update

2010, Philippe Sands KC becomes counsel to Mauritius for Chagos.

2O13, Sands' good friend, Keir Starmer KC, visits Mauritius for discussions with prime minister Navin Ramgoolam about the future of the Chagos islands. The meeting ends with the men in agreement.

2015, Ramgoolam is arrested on money-laundering charges.
The same year, Starmer is elected to Parliament for first time.

2019, Sands obtains an International Court of Justice ruling (advisory opinion only, and non-binding) that the Chagos islands should be given to Mauritius.

2020, Starmer becomes Labour Party leader.

2021, Sands receives Mauritius' top honour, The Most Distinguished Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.

2022, Sands makes an unauthorized entry into the Chagos Archipelago for a flag-raising ceremony. Sands tweets at the time, “It’s morning on Chagos, where the flag of Mauritius flies."

2023, Sands becomes Mauritius citizen, but retains his British and French citizenships.

2024, Starmer becomes UK Prime Minister, and overlooks his shadow Attorney General, Emily Thornberry, to appoint his old friend and fellow human-rights lawyer Richard Hermer. But he has to break with tradition by giving Hermer a peerage, so he can sit in the House Of Lords, and be part of the government.

Despite no mention of it in Labour's manifesto, Starmer quickly agrees the Chagos deal with Navin Ramgoolam, who is once again prime minister of Mauritius.

In November, Starmer makes another controversial appointment in Jonathan "dodgy dossier" Powell as his National Security Advisor.

2025, In January Lord Hermer recuses himself from signing off on the Chagos deal. The AG's office refuse to give details of why.

In February, Starmer makes yet another extremely controversial appointment in Peter "friend of Epstein" Mandelson as his US Ambassador.

Powell and Mandelson brief the White House over Chagos, and claim the UK has to give the archipelago to Mauritius because of international law. However, they assure the Americans that their military base on Diego Garcia is unaffected, as the UK has arranged a 99-year lease on the island.
Those assurances have now been proven to be worthless.

In late February, Mauritius’ former Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, who was in office when Starmer became PM, and was heavily involved in discussions about the Chagos deal before being replaced by Navin Ramgoolam in November, was arrested on money laundering charges after Mauritius' anti-corruption agency said it had seized suitcases of cash and luxury watches in raids on 10 locations, including Jugnauth’s home.

In August, Starmer is referred to the statistics' watchdog for misleading claims over the cost of the Chagos deal.
Many other claims are made during the year that Starmer had repeatedly "lied" about the true costs of the deal. There are even accusations that Starmer ordered his officials to announce misleadingly low figures.

2026, Trump, now with more information about the deal and the threats to Diego Garcia, slams the deal as, "an act of GREAT STUPIDITY".

Joining the dots.
Project Chagos has been running for over 16 years, and Starmer has been onboard since at least 2013.
Despite no mention in Labour's manifesto, or reports of Starmer talking about the issue publicly during his time as an MP, or on the election campaign trail, almost the first thing he does after entering Number 10 Downing Street is to make the Chagos deal, despite Mauritius repeatedly putting up the price during the final negotiations.
Starmer's controversial appointments of Hermer as AG, Powell as NSA, and Mandelson as US Ambassador all enabled and facilitated the passage of the Chagos deal.

Conclusions.
Giving Mauritius the Chagos Archipelago is an imperative for Starmer.
He has been involved with Sands' plans for a long time, but kept quiet about it since his 2013 visit to Mauritius.
When he became PM, and the opportunity arose, he put the plan into effect, made the political appointments he needed to circumnavigate the potential objections and opposition to the plan.
It is clear, Starmer is determined the deal will be made no matter what he has to do, or the damage it will cause the UK, Western security, the Chagossian people, and the pristine ecosystems of the islands and the marine protection zone.

We know Human Rights are important to Starmer. But his Chagos deal is anti Human-Rights.

So, what are Starmer's true motivations for giving the Chagos islands to China's close friend Mauritius?

Is it money, is he being blackmailed, is it a maniacal hatred of Great Britain and Judeo Christian civilization, or is it his loyalty to, and admiration for, another country?

We now know West Midlands Police banned Jewish away fans from attending a football match in Birmingham because they feared the wrath of local armed Islamists. Then they lied and blamed the Jewish fans.

It’s almost a week since the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, Craig Guilford came before the Home Affairs Select Committee and was confronted with the evidence amassed by my tenacious colleague @NJ_Timothy. He obfuscated and dissembled. We’re still waiting for him to resign, or be sacked by the Home Secretary.

But was the police’s deceit because didn’t they think the public could cope with the truth?

The reality is the police can no longer sustain their authority in parts of Britain and have to lie to preserve the illusion.

Mass migration and the abject failure of integration that has flowed with it has meant that in some places Islamists - unrespecting of British institutions of law and order, violent or openly threatening violence - now have such a foothold that the police do not know how to assert control and maintain order.

They believe they would be overwhelmed if they tried to enforce the law. They are too defeatist to try. Or perhaps they believe it better not to as the sight of their failure would be catastrophic for faith in them and in the rule of law as we’ve known it.

Rather than explain this shocking conclusion to the British public they develop false narratives - exemplified by the Maccabi Tel Aviv ban - to preserve the pretence of authority for as long as possible.

We saw the same in the aftermath of October 7th in London and elsewhere. The police made a myriad of excuses for their inaction in the face of the hate marches. They refused to be honest and concede the scale of the Islamist challenge was too big to confront.

It’s every time the police bow to the need to placate ‘community relations’. Police Commanders, sitting in mosques with so-called community leaders, praying in aid the support of local religious figures as they seek to do their jobs. In the summer disturbances of 2024 the police in Birmingham said they let the community “police itself”.

The fear is understandable.

Remember the almost paramilitary display we saw in Tower Hamlets recently - men in uniforms, an Islamist version of the black shirts that stalked the same streets almost a century ago.

Or the school teacher run out of his home community in Batley, and still in hiding, because he dared to show an image of Muhammad to pupils in a religious education class.

Or the Islamist gangs out in force at our last General Election, intimidating political rivals so their preferred extremist candidates could win.

In this world honesty about what’s happening becomes a radical choice. Instead two-tier policing becomes the norm. The police crack down on otherwise law abiding citizens in more petty and pointless ways to retain a semblance of authority, all the while perpetuating rampant falsehoods to ignore the elephant in the room.

The truth is we have a limited amount of time to address this, or it will become clear that the state has no clothes. Islamism will have won and the liberal, democratic values that underpinned our country for generations will have lost. With that will flow the ubiquity of Sharia courts, cousin marriage, hate preachers in mosques and antisemitism. Our foreign policy will be increasingly dictated by Islamism, rather than by any traditional understanding of British interests. Women’s rights will be further undermined. Our country will be a more threatening and violent place.

This is why the West Midlands Police scandal matters. It’s about more than a football match. It’s about who controls our streets - the police or the Islamists? Who governs our country - the Islamists or the rest of the British people?

The fight against Islamism is the fight of our generation. It’s a battle for the soul of the country.

You might think that the ongoing controversy over how West Midlands Police handled a football match last year between Aston Villa and the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv was about the game itself.

You'd be wrong. It's really about two far more important things: who controls the streets of Britain, and the police's duty to be open and honest.

On Monday, senior officers from West Midlands Police gave evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee. The MPs wanted the police to explain the reasoning and evidence behind their extraordinary decision to ban Israeli fans from November's match, ostensibly on 'safety' grounds.

This was the second time the officers had been hauled before MPs. Their first session, last month, was a car crash, with much of the evidence they had provided unravelling under a moment's scrutiny.

Astonishingly, Monday's session was even worse.

The day had started badly enough, with a newspaper publishing what appears to be the real reason the police had banned the Israeli fans. This was, in the police's own words, 'high-confidence intelligence' that 'elements of the community' were looking to 'arm themselves' to fight Jewish fans.

The 'community' to which they were referring, in a city as diverse as Birmingham, scarcely needs explaining.

Needless to say, the officers had made no attempt to reveal this intelligence in their previous appearance before the select committee last month. When one MP at this week's hearing asked West Midlands Chief Constable Craig Guildford why he had effectively hidden this crucial material from the committee during his previous appearance, Guildford replied: 'This is the first time specifically that you have asked for that detail.'

At this, Scottish Labour MP Joani Reid exclaimed: 'Absolutely outrageous!'

As Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Opposition, put it: 'West Midlands Police capitulated to Islamists and then collaborated with them to cover it up. They knew extremists were planning to attack Jews for going to a football match, and their response was to blame and remove Jewish people instead. They presented an inversion of reality and misled a parliamentary committee.'

It is clear to me that having decided on banning Jewish fans for fear of them falling victim to an Islamist hate-mob, the police then searched for evidence to justify this anti-Semitic exclusion. And when they couldn't find any, they concocted some in a revolting tissue of lies.

There are at least three clear suggestions of this, each of which poses stark questions about the honesty of Birmingham's boys in blue.

First, the intelligence report prepared by West Midlands Police in support of the ban cited a previous Maccabi 'match' in Britain, against West Ham. No such match took place.

As the chief constable revealed on Monday, officers first searched the national police database for information about problems with Maccabi fans at previous matches in Britain. Nothing came up, because there have been no problems. As Guildford told the MPs: 'They didn't find any relevant information within the searches that we made… and they basically Googled… and that's how the information came to be there.'

Google's AI, it now emerges, had 'hallucinated' the fictitious match between Maccabi and West Ham that the police had included in their useless 'report'. The chief constable told the committee: 'We don't use AI.' But they do: Google's search engine increasingly provides AI-generated results.

The police failed to do the most basic due diligence – to me this goes far beyond negligence, and it's clear they were desperate for any information, however spurious, to justify banning Jewish fans.

Second, at last month's hearing, Assistant Chief Constable Mike O'Hara told MPs that Birmingham's own Jewish community had wanted Maccabi fans banned from the city.

O'Hara added that the police had had extensive consultation with local Jewish representatives (as well as 'a range of faiths, backgrounds and ethnicities') who were 'very concerned'.

Again, this was simply not true. Far from consulting Birmingham's tiny 2,000-strong Jewish community, the police repeatedly ignored their requests to meet, speaking to them only after the ban had been imposed. After last month's Select Committee session, O'Hara wrote to Jewish representatives to apologise and admit that not a single member of the community had told the police they supported a ban. It was, he unconvincingly added, 'not my intention' to mislead.

Once again, it is clear that the police made their decision – and retroactively sought to justify it.

The third and most shocking piece of evidence for the police's outrageous behaviour is a Zoom call that the chief constable says he held with his peers in Amsterdam. As I have said, West Midlands Police based their case for a ban on concerns over public safety, citing events in Amsterdam when Maccabi played Dutch side Ajax.

In their report recommending a ban in Birmingham, the West Midlands police said 'significant numbers' of Maccabi fans were involved in 'demonstrations and confrontations' in Amsterdam, and cited claims that on match day, up to 600 Maccabi fans had 'committed a variety of targeted, hate motivated crimes'.

But all the evidence – not least publicly available Dutch court documents – shows that this is the precise opposite of what happened. The violence seen in Amsterdam was entirely the result of Muslim gangs orchestrating what they called a 'Jew hunt' for 'cancer Jews'. Not a single Maccabi fan was charged with any offence in Amsterdam.

Indeed, when contacted by British reporters about this, Dutch police took the rare step of issuing on-the-record contradictions of every one of the assertions made by West Midlands Police about what supposedly happened in Amsterdam.

The UK police had said Maccabi fans were 'highly organised, skilled fighters with a serious desire and will to fight with police and opposing groups'. Their Dutch counterparts insisted: 'The Amsterdam police does not recognise the claim.'

West Midlands said Dutch police had deployed some 5,000 officers. Dutch police responded: 'About 1,200 were deployed... 5,000 is so not true [sic].'

The Dutch could not have been clearer. But at the first select committee hearing last month, in a moment I suspect will come back to haunt him, Chief Constable Guildford told MPs that he had conducted a private Zoom conversation with Dutch police, who told him that every bizarre allegation West Midlands police had made about events in Amsterdam was in fact correct.

For this to be true, the Dutch police would have had to have effectively admitted to Guildford that they lied to their own courts, lied in their official report, lied to the Dutch media and lied to the British journalists who spoke to them on the record.

And then Guildford must have decided not to bother even recording this alleged Zoom call took place, let alone make a note of its explosive contents. Everyone would just have to trust him on that. Let me put it this way: pull the other one.

The reality is that from the moment the police announced the ban on Israeli fans, it seems that they have used obfuscation, smears and misleading statements to hide the truth.

This is why this scandal is so significant. It is the same lesson we should have learned from the rape gangs, where police in areas with significantly high Muslim populations apparently refused to act amid fears of being accused of 'racism' and an inability to deal with the community response – leading to tens of thousands of English girls having their lives destroyed.

It is time that, as a country, we started to tackle extremism properly. Of course the chief constable must resign. Of course he must now be investigated for alleged misconduct in public office.

But the lessons here go deeper than the actions of one rotten police force – and I pray that we finally start to learn them.

Following yesterday's revelations regarding the conduct of West Midlands Police surrounding events involving Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters, we are deeply concerned by the emerging evidence.

The newly disclosed assessments indicate that the primary threat to public safety and to the Israeli and Jewish communities did not originate from the fans themselves, but from organised radical Islamist groups who were actively preparing and arming themselves with the intention of harming Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters.

The portrayal of Israeli fans as violent was a gross mischaracterisation that served the needs of those actively inciting against an Israeli team.

This framing diverted attention away from credible intelligence warnings regarding extremist elements preparing to target Israeli and Jewish Maccabi supporters, and instead placed blame on the very community that was facing the threat.

The decision to obscure these assessments, and to allow a misleading narrative to take hold, raises serious questions. These acts by law enforcement institutions undermine real security risks, and even encourages a climate in which hostility towards Israeli and Jewish communities can be normalised under the rule of law.

These matters require full accountability.
