Today’s decision by the Parades Commission to force an unwanted orange march through the Garvaghy Road is absolutely reckless and disgraceful.

It completely disregards the right of the Garvaghy Road community to live free from intimidation and sectarianism.

45 years on, the courage and sacrifice of the 1981 Hunger Strikers continues to inspire Irish republicans across this island.

Today, thousands gathered in Ballina alongside the families of the Hunger Strikers to remember ten brave young men who gave their lives for freedom, dignity and justice.

The greatest tribute we can pay them is to carry their struggle forward - to organise, to build our strength and to finish the work of achieving a united Ireland.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their vision of a free and united Ireland lives on.

Today I joined the families of the hunger strikers and Republicans from every corner of the country at the National Hunger Strike Commemoration in Ballina, Mayo.

As we mark the 45th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strikes, we remember the immense courage and sacrifice of the hunger strikers throughout Ireland’s long struggle for freedom.

I want to pay particular tribute to their families who, through the most brutal and heartbreaking loss, have remained resilient and determined to carry their legacy forward.

The enormous crowds on the streets of Ballina today are a powerful testament to the enduring strength of their legacy and the place they continue to hold in the hearts of so many.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

President Catherine Connolly was among those who addressed the crowds at Belfast City Hall during the first day of the Fleadh.

Crowds spilled out into the streets to watch screens airing her speech, to which she said it was ‘very special’ the event was being held in the city.

The President said: “Over the next week, Belfast will welcome visitors from all corners of Ireland and the world… what lies ahead is a celebration of what we all have in common, and the universality of music, song, and dance.”
